Irene Martinka-Zak
Frankenmuth, MI

Irene Martinka-Zak who was a lifelong resident of the Frankenmuth area and member of St. Lorenz Lutheran Church passed away, surrounded by her family, at Covenant Hospital on Monday morning October 26th 2015 due to surgery complications; age 86 years.
Born October 30, 1928 in Chesaning, MI to the late Jacob and Antonia (Buchta) Hudecek. Irene married Gus J. Martinka on February 11, 1950 in Indiana. They were married for 28 years before his passing in April of 1978. Irene found a loving partner by meeting Paul Zak to whom she married in October of 1984 and has since predeceased her on November 20, 2009. Paul and Irene enjoyed their Czechoslovakian heritage and music and would travel miles and miles to participate in festivities, including a European trip to Czechoslovakia. Irene was employed by Redmen’s in Chesaning until the time of her marriage to Gus and then she became a domestic engineer for the rest of her career. She worked alongside her husband and mother-in-law (Agnes Martinka) for many years in the dairy business until the time of their decision to maintain the farm as cash crop only. She continued with her agricultural background by spending many hours in her vegetable garden, flower gardens and maintaining the Martinka farmlands and surrounding properties with the help of her sons. Irene was a gourmet cook, canner and crotchetier. Most of all she was a loving mother and grandmother to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She found great pride and joy in not only her children but mentoring the younger generations as they came along by learning and using the modern technology of her iphone to keep in touch. She loved frequenting casino’s, especially when she won! Irene loved taking care of people, be it her family or those around her, she was all of our “Nurse Nightengale”.
Irene has left the loved ones of Annette (Larry) Carter, Grand Blanc, MI; Michael Martinka, Vassar, MI; Marie (Randy) Braeutigam, Birch Run, MI and daughter-in-law Jean Martinka, Arvada, CO. Grandchildren Phillip (Stacey) Gillman, Rick Carter, Michael (Megan) Martinka, Brett Martinka, Gus (Melissa) Martinka, Thomas (Justine) Braeutigam and Kristen (Andrew) Opperman. Great grandchildren, Blake and Bryce Gillman, Beckett, Brooks & Eliza Martinka, Ula Martinka, Karlee and Brady Braeutigam and a baby Opperman due in April. Niece, Millie Trafidlo, Northville, MI, as well as many other nieces and nephews, close neighbor friends and friendships forged through her involvement in the WFLA Lodge and Polka Hall of Fame.
Irene was predeceased by her husband’s Gus J. Martinka and Paul Zak. Her son Gus D. Martinka and her sisters and brother-in-laws Agnes (John) Polasek, Mary (George) Secka and brother and sister-in-law Frank and Irene Hudecek.
