William Henry O’Connell, 93, of Bettendorf, IA, passed away Thursday, January 6, 2011 at Trinity Pathway Hospice, Bettendorf. William has chosen to be cremated with a burial at a later date. A Memorial Service will be held at 4:00PM Wednesday, January 12, 2011 in the Runge Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be from 3-4PM Wednesday at the mortuary. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in his name to Trinity Pathway Hospice, Bettendorf or Humane Society of Scott County. Online condolences may be made at www.rungemortuary.com.
He was born in Battle Creek, Michigan, on April 11, 1917, to Eva and William M. O’Connell. William served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was the founder of Big River Equipment Company Incorporated, Bettendorf which began in April, 1949.
Among his hobbies and interests were golfing, traveling, and gambling as well as being a dedicated Hawkeye fan. He was member of Trinity Episcopal Church. He was a longtime member of Davenport Country Club, Crow Valley Country Club, and the Elks. He spent his retirement in Clearwater, Florida and Brevard, North Carolina.
He is survived by his wife, Janice; his daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Ron Malmen of Bettendorf; his grandson, Brian Malmen of LeClaire; his granddaughter, Julie Logan, of Bettendorf; and four great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Marjorie; brother, Mort; and daughter, Marcia. He left a great number of friends in North Caroline, Florida, as well as the Quad Cities.
