David was born on February 8, 1944, to the late Samuel and Catherine (Deno) Sheaffer, and lovingly raised by his late aunt and uncle, Harold and Violet Fair. A 1962 graduate of Huron High School in New Boston, David continued his education at Port Huron Junior College before transferring to Eastern Michigan University. There, he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in industrial arts and education. He was especially proud to be a member of the Eastern Michigan University band, where he played the drums. David later earned a second master’s degree from Central Michigan University.
On June 22, 1968, David married Gloria Miller and together they shared many memorable years filled with camping trips, vacations, and cruises. He spent his career in the classroom, teaching in a couple of school districts before retiring from Mt. Morris Schools in 1998. David was also a beloved coach in Mt. Morris, remembered fondly for his dedication to the football and baseball teams, as well as for coaching his daughter’s summer softball league over the years. He was a devoted member of Bethany United Methodist Church, where he served as head trustee for several years. His church family was deeply important to him and remained a meaningful part of his life. David loved making memories at the family cabin in Harrison and also enjoyed fishing and snowmobiling. At home, he could often be found in his garage, happily tinkering on a project. He started the Mt. Morris Racing Team, a local auto club where members worked on vehicles and enjoyed drag racing together. A loyal Detroit Lions fan through thick and thin, David never missed a game or a chance to cheer on his team. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Cheering them on at their sporting events and taking them out for snack runs were some of his favorite moments.
