COONROD, Bernard C. – of Chesaning, died Sunday, November 9, 2025, at Union Court. He was 95 years of age.
Bernard was born May 2, 1930 in New Haven, IN to the late Ernest and Gertrude (Hollenbach) Coonrod. He served in the US Navy during the Korean War. He was united in marriage to Georgina McCann on October 4, 1952. She preceded him in death on May 6, 2024. Bernie and Georgina became residents of Chesaning in 1953. Mr. Coonrod was employed for many years at Johnson Controls and also owned and operated Coonrod Trenching. He was an active member of St. Peter Catholic Church, St. Christopher Knights of Columbus Council #2943, American Legion Post #212 where was the chaplain, was a lay minister most of his adult life, comforted patients at Union Court , gave communion and prayed the rosary. He was active with the Saginaw County fair; he mowed the fairgrounds voluntarily for many years and was part of the team posting flags for the fair and tractor shows. He was known for dressing the part for holidays: Easter, Veterans Day, July 4th, New Years, St. Patrick’s Day, etc. He loved singing, playing instruments and faithfully prayed the rosary every day at St. Peter Church.
Surviving are: children: Kathleen (Kevin) Smith of Oakley, Gertie (Mike) Meier of Naubinway, Wanda (Larry) Fifield of Burt, Joan (Henry) Delbridge of Burt, Rose (Dale) Reiber of Chesaning, Bernie (Beth) Coonrod of Chesaning; 27 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and dear friends. He was also preceded in death by: 2 daughters, Vivian Cook and Nancy Kettle; grandson, Scott Coonrod; brother, Robert Coonrod; and a sister, Rose Mary Krysiak.
The funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, November 13, 2025, at St. Peter Catholic Church, 404 S. Wood Street, Chesaning. Burial to follow in Resurrection Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm Wednesday at Misiuk Funeral Home in Chesaning and at the church from 10:00 am until time of mass at 11:00 am. A Vigil will be held at 7:00 pm and a rosary will be prayed at 8:00 pm by the Knights of Columbus at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter Catholic Church, Saginaw County Fair or the Young at Heart at the Chesaning Senior Center.
