DOWELL, Raymond E. - Of Burton, age 89, died Sunday, July 6, 2014 at Genesys Regional Medical Center.
Visitation 12-8pm Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road. A Memorial Service conducted by VFW Post #822 Honor Guard will be held 7pm Wednesday evening at the funeral home.
Military Honors will be held 11am Tuesday, July 15, 2014
at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly Michigan under the auspices of VFW Post #822 Honor Guard.
Raymond was born in Warren, MI on July 20, 1924. He was raised in Cheboygan, MI and moved to Flint 60 years ago. On July 8, 1952 he married Shirley Sova. Ray enlisted and proudly served in the Army Air Corp in the European Theater during World War II, flying 35 missions as a turret ball gunner. He was a member of the VFW Post #822, Eagles and the D.A.V. Ray enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing the drums and harmonica. He was employed with General Motors for 28 years, retiring in 1999.
Surviving are wife, Shirley;
children, Bill Dowell and Debbie Rutherford, Charmaine White and George Stheiner, Laurie Gunsell and Sandra Dowell;
grandchildren, Shannon, Jason, John, Chris, Nancy, Billy, Aaron, Cassie, Mathew and Jennifer;
and many great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son, Skip, son-in-law, Matt Gunsell, parents, Loren and Clara Dowell and 2 brothers.
