David Lee Shenk

Born: 7/3/1941
Died: 9/1/2026
Age: 85
Community: Durand, MI

David Lee Shenk, of Durand, passed away peacefully September 1, 2026 at The Swank Home in Swartz Creek, at 85 years old surrounded by his family. Dave was born July 3, 1941 at the Durand Hospital to Joseph and Carol Shenk.

He attended Durand Area High School where he met the love of his life, Rebecca Porter. They married on May 20, 1961 and spent 60 wonderful years together before her passing on October 28, 2021. Together they raised 2 children whom they adored. Daughter Vickie in 1962 and Son Scott in 1964.

Dave worked at Shenk’s Pit for his grandfather from 1959 until 1964 when he joined The Shiawassee County Sheriff's Department as a road officer in 1964, later becoming Under Sheriff in 1980 with best friend, Sheriff A James Lajoye. He Retired from the Sheriff Department in 1996 after 32 years.

Dave was an avid golfer, and was a member of the Moose and The Eagles.

He bled Maize and Blue and lived for Michigan Football Saturdays and loved cheering on Detroit Tigers Baseball.

After retirement Dave and Becky moved to Clerbrook Golf Resort in Clermont Florida, where they met many lifelong friends. They enjoyed summers back in Durand in their RV. Dave’s family was his passion! His most important role was father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was Dad, Papa and great Papa to so many and His family was his greatest joy!

After moving home in February of 2025, he very much enjoyed watching his great grandchildren play their sports and was their biggest fan.

Dave is survived by his 2 children: Vickie (Kim) Shenk of Venice, FL and Scott (Jackie) Shenk of Durand; 3 grandchildren: Heather (Jake Neering) of Lennon, Whitney (Brian) Kincaid of Lennon and Nicole (Maria) Shenk of Pinellas Park, FL; 5 great grandchildren: Jonathon, Camryn and Giulia Gall, and Brianna and Elliana Kincaid, and his big brother, Robert (Jane) Shenk of Durand, as well as so many wonderful friends.

Dave will be deeply missed, but we take comfort in knowing that he is finally playing a round of golf where every drive goes straight down the fairway, and is enjoying a cold Scotch and Water afterwards. Dave was the kind of man who gave without expecting anything in return, always ensuring his family and friends were taken care of. He leaves behind a legacy of showing up for the people he loved, and a family that will forever try to match his giant heart.

A memorial service to celebrate Dave’s life will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, September 12, 2026 at the Durand VFW Post 2272, 923 N. Saginaw St. Durand, MI 48429. Online condolences may be shared with Dave’s family by going to www.watkinsfuneralhomes.com
