Sanders, Helen B. passed away peacefully on June 6, 2025 at Oliver Woods Assisted Living in Owosso, MI at the age of 90 years.
A visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, June 20, 2025, at Rossell Funeral Home, 307 E. Main Street, Flushing. Family and friends will also gather from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at the funeral home. A private burial will follow at Bendle Cemetery.
Helen was born and raised in Indianapolis, IN on a large dairy farm. She graduated from Decatur High School in Valley Mills, class of 1952, and then from Earlham College in Richmond IN, class of 1956, with a degree in elementary education. Born and raised in a Quaker family, she was a member of the Valley Mills Friends Meeting. Her Quaker upbringing influenced her lifelong beliefs in civil rights and non-violence. After graduation she moved to Flint, MI and taught first grade in elementary school. Now in Flint, she met Francis A. Sanders and they were married in 1957. Helen was a classically trained soprano, having studied voice at Earlham. She sang in the choir at First Presbyterian Church and as a performing member of the St. Cecilia Society. She was a past president and honorary member of the St. Cecilia Society of Flint and a Past President of the Flint Music Teachers Association. Helen taught piano for 40 years and eagerly dedicated her time and effort to organizing Junior St. Cecilia, Junior Festival and Michigan Federation of Music Clubs student achievement activities.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Sanders of Flint, MI; parents, Howard and Bernice Mills of Indianapolis, IN; brothers, Morris Mills of Crawfordsville, IN, and Murray Mills of Indianapolis, IN.
She is survived by her brothers, Howard Mills Jr. and wife Gussie of Martinsburg, WV, Amos Mills and wife Gloria of Pendleton, IN; sister-in-law, Joan Clifford of Lennon, MI; daughter, Tamara of Bancroft, MI; sons, Stephen of Millington, MI, and Matthew of Troy, MI.
The family wishes to express our gratitude to the wonderful staff at Oliver Woods for the excellent care provided to Helen through her final years. |
