of Flushing, age 87, died Saturday, May 19, 2018, at his home. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, May 24, 2018, at Rossell Funeral Home. Dr. Joseph Novak will officiate. Burial will follow at Flushing Cemetery. Visitation will be 3-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Flushing Historical Society.
Dean was born in Flint, Michigan on August 27, 1930, the son of Ralph Herbert and Iva May (Dean) Haley. He married Joan Elaine Cannon in West Hill, Ontario, Canada, on August 29, 1959. Dean proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and was an active member of Flushing American Legion, Post #283. He attended Flint Junior College, earned his Bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University, and his Master’s degree from Eastern Michigan University. Dean worked for Mott Community College for 26.5 years, retiring from his final position as Director of Continuing Education. After his retirement, he served on the Flushing School Board for many years. Dean believed in the importance of community and loved Flint and Flushing. Dean was a people person through and through and loved talking and telling stories. He enjoyed American and local history, walking, fishing, classic cars, reading and spending time with his wife, Joan in Long Lake, Michigan. Dean was a passionate supporter of education and the performing arts in the Flint Cultural Center, Flushing and Genesee County; he never missed a music concert or theatre performance of his daughters or grandchildren.
Dean is survived by his wife of 58 years, Joan Elaine Haley; daughters, Janet Elaine Haley of Flushing, Barbara Jean and husband Dale Ehrhart of Flushing; granddaughters, Rachel and Nicole Ehrhart; cat, Callie; and cousin, Richard "Dick" Haley of Massachusetts. Dean was preceded in death by his parents.
