BROWN, James Edward, of Montrose, age 76, passed away on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at Covenant Healthcare in Saginaw, Michigan after a long fight with lung cancer, surrounded by his loving family. In honoring James’s wishes, cremation has taken place, and a celebration of life will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
James was born August 28, 1949 in Traverse City, Michigan to the late William and Florence (Keith) Brown. He grew up in Montrose, Michigan and attended Montrose High School. On September 21, 1968 he married Brenda J. Phillips in Montrose, Michigan. James started in the excavating business when he was a young man, with his dad and brother and went on to become the owner and operator of his own excavating companies. He owned & operated Northwest Sand & Gravel, Northwest Excavating, DJ Topsoil, and BBJ Corporation with over 40 years of service. Later in life he enjoyed passing on his knowledge and skills working along side his son and nephew at his sons excavating company Northwest Earth Movers. James was a member of the Local 324 Operators Union. He was an avid gun collector and enjoyed traveling all over the United States in his motorhome with his wife and family. In his youth James enjoyed racing motorcycles and snowmobiles. He loved John Wayne movies and collecting western memrobilia. However, his greatest joy in life was his family, especially his grandchildren. He will be dearly missed.
Surviving are: Wife of 57 years, Brenda Brown; Children, Jamie (Frank) Chrysler, Adam (Merisa) Brown; Grandchildren, Austin (Seth) Wendling, Cole Chrysler, Ian Chrysler, Jack Brown, Luke Brown, Sawyer Brown, Emmett Brown; Siblings, Mary (Dave) Sproul, William (Jan) Brown; Special Nephew, Douglas Graves; several nieces and nephews.
