Ida was born in Flint, MI on April 1, 1946, daughter of the late Walter and Mildred (Michelson) Turner. Ida was a graduate of Flint Southwestern High School Class of 1964. On September 30, 1967, Ida Turner married James Albert Payne and he preceded her in death on September 17, 1997. She retired from General Motors/Delphi in January 1999 after 33 years of service. Ida was a faithful member of Emmanuel Church, where she spent more than five decades as a Sunday School teacher, devoted to the Kindergarten classroom for 53 years. She also served as a nursery worker on Wednesday evenings and lent her talents to various other church ministries as needed. Her love for spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ was evident in all that she did, from sending heartfelt cards and notes for birthdays, holidays, and anniversaries, to offering a kind word to everyone she met. Above all, Ida cherished time spent with her family, especially spoiling her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her nurturing spirit extended beyond her family as she devoted much of her life to caring for others. Whether it was as a caregiver, preserving fruits and vegetables through canning, or offering a helping hand in any way she could, Ida embodied love, compassion, and selflessness. Ida’s faith in Jesus Christ was her guiding light. She often shared her belief that the only true life is found in a personal relationship with Him. Her favorite scripture, Hebrews 13:5-8, resonated deeply with her, a reminder of God’s discipline and love in our lives. Ida’s legacy of love, service, and unwavering faith will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and all who knew her. She leaves behind a profound example of what it means to live a life dedicated to Christ and to others.
Ida is survived by her son, Walter Payne; 5 grandchildren, Kenny (Camryn Folt) Payne, Sierra (Aaron) Harvey, Gabrielle Payne, Caitlin Payne and Katie (Drew) Dodds; 5 great-grandchildren with 1 on the way, Axton, Cheyenne, Brandon, Maxwell and Tyler; sister, Virginia Carrothers; brother-in-law, Dave Angus; sister-in-law, Pat Graham; special friend, Glenda Hunt; many other loving family members and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Mildred Turner; husband, James Albert Payne; sister, Mildred Angus; niece, Linda Myers; 2 brothers-in-law, Olin Carrothers and Richard Graham.
