Nickel, Gary Edgar, of Flushing, age 76, died Monday, December 7, 2020, at McLaren-Flint. Due to the current restrictions, visitation and funeral service will be private. A live-stream of the funeral will be on Rossell Funeral Home Facebook page at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 11, 2020. Private burial will be at Great Lakes National Cemetery. If desired, memorial contributions may be made in Gary’s memory to the Flushing Area Chamber of Commerce, Flushing Area Senior Center or the Old Newsboys of Flint.
Gary was born in Fenton, Michigan on January 15, 1944, the son of Leo and Marion (Lossing) Nickel. He graduated from Ainsworth High School in 1962 and following graduation entered the United States Marine Corp where he proudly served his country. Upon discharge, he returned to work at General Motors at QPC on Van Slyke Road in Flint, transferring to Pontiac in 1997, retiring after 33 years. He married Lois Haskin on May 4, 1996.
Gary was Flushing’s volunteer Photographer, capturing many community events. His motto was “I Love Flushing!” He was active with the Flushing Senior Center, where he served on the board of directors. Gary also spent hours volunteering for the Old Newsboys and Whaley Children’s Center of Flint, taking photos of their many events. He was active in Westside Baptist Church on Pasadena in Flushing. Gary loved the Lord and talked to many about submitting their lives to the Lord.
Gary is survived by his wife, Lois; sons, Christopher (Toni) Nickel, Steve (Carrie) Nickel; grandchildren, Hayden, McCullen, Tucker, Cameron and Avery; brother, Jim (Midge) Nickel; sisters, Colleen (Don) Schultz, Florence Nickel, Dorothy (Bernie) Mexicotte; brothers-in-law, Ed Abbott, Mike (Julie) Haskin; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Sally Abbott; and many aunts and uncles. |
