Reverend Bernard Lyman Tyler, devoted priest, beloved brother and uncle, and faithful servant of Christ, passed away peacefully at home on April 28, 2026, surrounded by his family. He leaves behind a legacy of unwavering faith, gentle humor, and a lifetime of service to God’s people.
Born August 31, 1934 in Flint, Michigan, Father Tyler grew up on a farm in Goodrich, where he learned the values of hard work, humility, and helping others. He often recalled driving the team horses and wagon during hay season, stacking bales in the barn, and pitching in wherever he was needed. These early years shaped the generous, steady, and service minded spirit that would define his entire life.
His calling to the priesthood came early, clearly and unmistakable when he was in the eighth grade. In 1948, he began his studies at St. Augustine Seminary in Holland, Michigan. He went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy from Villanova University in 1957, continued his theological studies at Augustinian College in Washington, D.C., and later received a Master’s Degree in Pastoral Ministry from Loyola University in New Orleans.
Father Tyler professed his vows in 1953 and was ordained into the Order of St. Augustine on June 7, 1961, in Chicago. He celebrated his first Mass at Saint Matthew’s in Flint on June 11, 1961. His early ministry took him to parishes in Chicago, Illinois; Flint, Michigan; Independence, Missouri; and Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he served with dedication and compassion.
Growing up with deaf siblings, Father Tyler became fluent in American Sign Language which was a gift that became central to his ministry. He served the Archdiocese of Chicago as Director and Chaplain for the Catholic Deaf and Hearing Impaired, offering pastoral care to a community that held a special place in his heart. His ability to communicate across barriers was one of the many ways he lived out his calling to serve.
In 1991, he was incardinated into the Diocese of Lansing, returning to parish life, which he often said was where he felt most at home. He served faithfully in parishes in East Lansing, Burton, Fenton, and Dexter, becoming a trusted spiritual guide, a steady presence, and a friend to many. He entered Senior Priest status in 2001.
Retirement did not slow him. After moving to Johannesburg, Michigan, he received yet another calling. In May 2004, he began ministry in the Diocese of Gaylord, serving at St. James and St. Hubert Parishes. He continued this work for 19 additional years, completing his service at the remarkable age of 89. His commitment to pastoral care, communication, and service never wavered.
Father Tyler often said, “I want to work on a deeper level with people in the sense of taking care of their spiritual needs.” He lived this promise every day. He was known for his kindness, his listening ear, his gentle humor, and his ability to make every person feel seen and valued. Wherever he served, he formed deep connections and lasting friendships.
The fourth of eight children, he proudly referred to himself as “number four.” He was a devoted family man who remained close to his siblings throughout his life and had the honor of presiding at many of their weddings and funerals. To his nieces and nephews, he was a source of warmth, wisdom, and steady love.
His hobbies reflected his thoughtful and joyful nature. He loved reading anything placed in his hands, playing the piano and organ, enjoying a good card game, walking, and spending time with parishioners and family. A proud Michigan State University fan, he never missed a chance to cheer for the Spartans and was known for his fondness for the color green.
Father Tyler is survived by his brother Michael Tyler, his sisters Elizabeth Reger and Jacqueline Boris, several nieces and nephews, and many beloved friends and parishioners whose lives were touched by his faith, humor, and gentle presence.
He is preceded in death by his father Nelson Tyler, his mother Katherine Tyler, his sisters Kathleen Tyler, Theresa Glasgow, and Rosalie Felisky, and his brother James Tyler.
Reverend Bernard L. Tyler lived his vocation with humility, joy, and a servant’s heart. His legacy endures in the communities he served, the people he loved, and the faith he shared so generously. May he rest in the peace of Christ, whom he served so faithfully.
