CASWELL, David Leslie, age 73, of Flint, passed away peacefully at Genesys Convalescent Center, and heaven gained an angel on March 26, 2014. David left this world in the same manner in which he lived his life, surrounded by family and friends. A celebration of David’s life will be held at 1:00PM Saturday, March 29, 2014 at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, G-9020 S. Saginaw St., Grand Blanc, the Reverend George L. Cleaves Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends 11AM Saturday until time of service at the church. He will be laid to rest at Evergreen Cemetery. The family would appreciate and enjoy sharing a catered meal with all of David’s wonderful friends and all who wish to attend, which will be held at Fellowship Hall, St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church immediately following the interment. Visitation will be 1:00PM - 8:00PM Friday at Hill Funeral Home, 11723 S. Saginaw St., Grand Blanc. Memorial Donations may be made to the Humane Society of Genesee County.
David was born January 30, 1941 in Flint, the son of the late Burton and Grace Leslie (Brown) Caswell. He graduated from Grand Blanc High School in 1959. David then earned his Bachelor’s Degree from The University of Michigan in 1962 and later he achieved his Master’s Degree from Eastern Michigan University.
David was employed by Flint Community Schools as an Elementary School Teacher and Principal for 41 years. He was a member of Flint Association of Elementary School Principals, Flint Congress of School Administrators and was the First President of the Flint Teachers Union. In addition, he was active in the Flint Neighborhoods United, Eastside Business Association, Southside Business Association and Metawanenee Hills Neighborhood Association. He was a Boy Scout Master and a Big Brother for over 30 years, mentoring seven little brothers. David truly believed the education of children is their future, and ours.
David was genuinely patriotic and a civic-minded man. He was the ultimate volunteer, and made donating his time a life-long journey. He was involved in City Wide Crime Watches, Code Red Program, Candidates Forum Organizer and Citizens Nuisance Task Force. David as a regular monitor and observer of Flint City Council meetings, City Attorney Court Service Workers, an Organizer of Special Neighborhood Clean-ups through Department of Public Works, and volunteered and presented “President’s Classes” for area students. He was also active in many Block Clubs and Neighborhood Associations, served on Flint Community School Facilities Advisory Committee and he pumped and transported water from the Flint River and Thread Creek for the community gardens.
In his free time, David enjoyed deer hunting, canoeing, backpacking, bicycling, cross country skiing, playing Bridge and was a Ham Radio Operator. He loved cats, dogs and children.
Surviving are his precious pets, Lady and Aaron; sister, Rosemary Stachowiak and husband, Gary of Grand Blanc; two brothers, Bruce Caswell of Dearborn, Gordon Caswell of Dunedin, FL; two nieces and four nephews, John, Susan and Kevin Stachowiak; Susan, David and James Caswell; great-niece, Rebekah Caswell and many special friends.
