Joe Earl Coyner passed peacefully on November 14, 2025, at the age of 91.
Funeral service will be held at 2pm Saturday, November 22,2025, at Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Reverend Marv Herman officiating.
Visitation will be at 12pm till the time of service at the funeral home.
Burial in Great Lakes National Cemetery.
He was born in Flint, MI, on September 24, 1934, the son of Meryl and Cecil Coyner.
Joe lived an abundant life, marrying his lifelong sweetheart, Alice Coyner, on September 29, 1956, while serving in the US Navy.
Joe retired and served as a public-school teacher for 9 years. He continued his career as a professor of special education at Eastern Michigan University for 35 years. Joe led the groundbreaking efforts to organize parents and EMU staff to make laws protecting and advocating for disabled children and adults. During his life he served on countless committees to advocate for all people and the environment.
He was a member of Lincoln Park United Methodist Church, serving in the Youth Group and the United Methodist Men’s Group. He was a board member of the Sisters of St. Francis, St. Francis Home for Boys in Detroit.
Joe was a longtime sponsor of Whaley Children's Home for neglected and abused children in Flint.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and Bristol United Methodist Church.
Joe is survived by his wife of 69 years, Alice Coyner, daughters, Ann Coyner, Nancy and George Vickers, grandchildren, Jonathan Vickers and wife Anne Brings, Jennifer Vickers and husband Ryan Smith, Allison Vickers and fiancé Ezra Steffen, and Emily Vickers, two surrogate sons, Duane DeMeyer and Jamie Foster, many special nieces, nephews, family and friends.
