Donald James Smith

Age 89 of Owosso passed away Saturday, February 17, 2018 at Memorial Healthcare.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held 10am Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Fr. Dieudonne Ntakarutimana officiating. Burial will follow at St. Paul Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Nelson-House Funeral Homes-Owosso Chapel on Tuesday from 2pm to 8pm with a rosary prayed at 7pm.

Donald was born March 3, 1928 in Flint, the son of Floyd Smith and Mary Leone (Phillips) Weisner.

He was a graduate of Owosso High School.

Donald was a Merchant Marine Sailor during World War II in the Pacific and Mediterranean and served after the war in the Great Lakes Fleet. He was very proud of his service to his Country.

Donald had a passion for family history and spent his retirement years doing research and volunteer work to help and teach people to use genealogy resources such as computers and libraries to discover their family trees. He took great pleasure in acquainting people with their ancestors. Over the years he was an active member of the choir at St. Joseph Catholic Church (with his wife Betty), Boy Scouts, Flint Genealogy Society, Shiawassee County Historical Society, Shiawassee County Library Board, and American Legion Post 502 of Elsie, Michigan.

He married Opal "Betty" Hammond in Los Angeles, CA on July 3, 1948.

Donald retired from Consumers Energy after 33 years of service.

He is survived by his wife Betty of 69 years; children Don (Carolyn) Smith, Carol Anne Smith and Michael (Laurie) Smith; grandchildren Alex Newell, Andrew Smith and Jason Smith; several nieces, nephews and many other loving family members and friends which also include the residents and staff at “The Meadows” and close friend Duane Seward, who is very kind to Donald and Betty.

Donald was predeceased by his parents; three brothers and a sister.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Elsie American Legion Post 502, Shiawassee County Historical Society or Flint Genealogy.
