Stevens, James Larry of Byron, age 74, died Friday, July 4, 2025, at Henry Ford Genesys. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at Rossell Funeral Home. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Monday and 10 a.m. Tuesday until the time of the service at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
James was born in Flint, Michigan on November 15, 1950, the son of Lawrence and DeVona (Bettesworth) Stevens. He was a graduate of Flushing High School, Class of 1968. He received his bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan University and later his master’s degree from Saginaw Valley. James taught elementary school for 30 years at Westwood Heights School in the Hamady School District. He married Salli Herr on June 27, 1992, at Stepping Stone Falls in Flint. They we both enthusiastic supporters of Hamady Hawks Basketball. James was also a U of M football fan. He played in a softball league and enjoyed playing second base with his brother, Jerry, playing short stop. James was an avid reader. He loved hunting and fishing and enjoyed listening to classic rock music.
James is survived by his wife of 33 years, Salli; son, Damon Stevens; step-sons, Nicholas and wife Jackie Taylor, Benjamin and wife Korrine Taylor; grandchildren, Alexander James Stevens, Brooks Taylor, Jaye Taylor, Harrison Taylor, Sloane Taylor, Evie Taylor; sister, Patty Stevens; brother, Jerry and wife Vickie Stevens; nephew, Adam Stevens; and many cousins, colleagues, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. |
