Charles John Liesen Sr.

March 16, 1935 – March 28, 2026

Charles "Charlie" John Liesen Sr., 91, passed away peacefully at home on March 28, 2026, surrounded by his family and his devoted companions, his dog Coco II and his cat Sasha.

A Life of Craftsmanship

Born in 1935 to Carl and Thelma Liesen, Charlie was a man of immense talent and work ethic. His career began at the DeBuck sod farm in Davison, MI, and many others until leading him eventually to Fisher Body. It was while he was there that he discovered his true calling as a mason working both jobs for several years. Charlie eventually left the shop to pursue his passion for brick, block, stone, and cement work full-time, a great decision that allowed him to become a true artist in his field.

More than just a builder of things he was a builder of men, Charlie was a mentor. He taught his craft to countless men who carried his lessons into their own successful careers. Even after retirement, his hands stayed busy; he was a skilled welder who built trailers and the very homes he lived in during his early to mid-adulthood. If a job needed doing, Charlie could do it.

Family and Legacy

While he took great pride in his work, Charlie’s love for his animals was lived without apology. He will be deeply missed by his surviving children: Debra Crum (Philip), Donna Newsom, Christopher (Chris) Liesen, Michael (Debbie) Liesen and stepchildren Kim Gilliland, Tony (Julee) Henrickson, and Shawn (Ken) Davis.

He was the proud grandfather of Robert Dace (Merrie), Ryan Dace (Shaunna), Amy Strong, Brian M. Lynk, Nathan R. Newsom, Jeremey Liesen, Travis Liesen, Kristen Liesen, Brooke Liesen, Lindsay Liesen, Kaye Marie (Justin) Shuman, Sara (Evan) Knowlton, and Marshal Liesen, along with many step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Charlie is also survived by his siblings, Carl Liesen II of Davison and Agnes (Aggie) Zimmerman of Derby, KS.

Preceded in Death

Charlie is reunited in death with his parents, Carl and Thelma Liesen; his wife Sandra; his sister, Shirley Ur; his son, Charles John Liesen II and daughter-in-law Donna June Liesen; his grandson, Michael Marley, great granddaughter Kaila Dace and stepson Todd Henrickson.

Honoring Charles’ wishes, no funeral will take place. A private celebration of life will take place at a later date.
