DES ARMIER, Rita Mary – Formerly of Flint, age 82, went to be with the Lord Saturday, April 22, 2017.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11am Saturday, April 29, 2017 at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 2415 Bagley Street, Flint

Burial in Old Calvary Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation 1-8pm Friday at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint. A Scripture Service will be held 7pm Friday evening at the funeral home. Visitation 10am Saturday at church until the time of the Mass.

Contributions may be made to St. John Vianney Catholic Church, the Muscular Dystrophy Association and/or a charity of one's choice.

Rita was born to Mae (Barabe) and Elmer Des Armier on February 9, 1935 in Flint, Michigan. She attended Longfellow Elementary and Junior High School, and graduated from St. Michael's Catholic High School in 1952. She attended and graduated from Nazareth College, in Kalamazoo, Michigan in 1956. She earned two graduate degrees from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

Rita worked several years at the Upjohn Company in Kalamazoo, Michigan and at St. Joseph Hospital in Flint, Michigan. In 1964, she began teaching in the Flint Community Schools and was a guidance counselor there for 29 and a half years, retiring in 1999.

Throughout her life, Rita enjoyed family and friends, playing bridge and scrabble, reading, biking, hiking, gardening, photography, knitting and Bible study. She enjoyed visiting new places and cultures and felt fortunate to have spent time in Europe, Mexico, the Far East, Russia, Canada and Africa. In 1958, she was a Community Ambassador to Mexico from Kalamazoo (Experiment in International Living). In retirement, Rita was a volunteer at Avalon Hospice, worked in the S.M.I.L.E. program for the Flushing Community Schools and served on the Allegro Board of the Flint Institute of Music from 2008 to 2014.

Rita is survived by her nieces, Lenore Anne Ellery, Sheri Christine (Bernie) Bennett, and her grand nephews, Robert Joseph (Ashley Marie) Bennett and Jordan Anthony Bennett. Great-grandnephew, Gabriel. She also leaves behind many close cousins and extended family and friends.

Rita is predeceased by her parents, Mae (Barabe) and Elmer Des Armier; sister, Anne Des Armier Ellery; brother-in-law Donald Lloyd Ellery and her nephews Donald Francis and Daniel Leonard Ellery.
