Elsner, Thomas E. of Flushing, age 74, died Monday, July 25, 2016, at Concerned Country Care in Montrose. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday, August 19, 2016, at Flushing United Methodist Church. Pastor Jeanne Wisenbaugh will officiate. Burial of cremated remains will follow at Flushing Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, August 18, 2016, at Rossell Funeral Home and 10 a.m. Friday, at the church until the time of the service. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Flushing United Methodist Church or to an applied mathematics Kettering University scholarship (www.kettering.edu/give).
Thomas was born in Benton Harbor, Michigan on May 13, 1942, the son of Edward and Theresa (Graeber) Elsner. He grew up in Stevensville, Michigan and attended Western Michigan University where he met and fell in love with Nancy Nichols. They were married on April 30, 1966, in Kalamazoo. Thomas received his PhD in Mathematics from Michigan State University and was a Professor for over 40 years at GMI/Kettering. He was a Past President of the State of Michigan Mathematics Association. Thomas was a member of Flushing United Methodist Church. He was an avid bowler and stamp collector.
Thomas is survived by his wife of 50 years, Nancy; son, Edward Elsner of Oswego, NY; daughter, Amanda Elsner of Indianapolis, IN; grandsons, Dylan and Wesley; mother, Theresa; three brothers, Jim (Anita), Gary (Emilie), Duke (Gayla); and several nieces and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his father, Edward; and mother and father-in-law, Donna and Nathan Nichols.
