Whalen, Vern “Lee” – of Clio, age 80, passed away Wednesday, March 27, 2024, at McLaren Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 1PM, Monday, April 1, 2024, at O’Guinn Family Funeral Home. Rev. Ralph Piper will officiate. Burial to follow at Flint Memorial Park. The family will receive visitors on Monday at the funeral home from 10AM until the time of service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Genesee County Humane Society.
Lee was born September 19, 1943, in Flint, Michigan, to the late John Whalen and Laura Whalen; raised by Laura and Herman Babcock. Lee enjoyed a fulfilling life that revolved around family, and his favorite sports teams. A graduate of Mt. Morris High School with the class of 1961, Lee married his high school sweetheart, Glenda Wheeler, on October 3, 1964. He proudly served his country as a United States Army Veteran from 1968 to 1970 and was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Mt. Morris. Whether is was supporting and cheering on his son’s little league, high school, and college baseball teams, watching his granddaughter swim and play ball, or simply playing catch with his grandson In the living room, Lee was his happiest around his family and engaged in some sort of sports activity. Lee was a loyal supporter of Detroit's sports teams and a dedicated Michigan State fan. Lee found great enjoyment camping at his favorite place, Aloha State Park. However, his greatest source of happiness came from his grandchildren, who meant the world to him.
Surviving are: Loving wife of 59 years, Glenda Whalen; Son, Travis (Melissa) Whalen; Grandchildren: Hunter, and Briar; Sisters: Laurena (Wayne) Davis, Gail Beauchamp; Several nieces and nephews.
