BUCK, Vernon Eugene - March 12, 1945 - September 4, 2020 Vernon Eugene Buck passed away on September 4, 2020, after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gordon and June Buck, and is survived by his wife of 33 years, Gloria Eby-Buck, his sister Arlene [Jim] Kohan (Collingwood, TN) and his brother Dennis [Karen] Buck (Ovid, MI). He leaves behind his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Carol and John Pittinger, stepchildren Monica (John) Getz, Julie (Tom) Sussi, and Bryan Eby, nephews Bryan and Brett, and grandchildren Stacy, Cameron, Amy, Sam and Jake. An accomplished pilot, Vern completed the Aviation Program at Mott Community College and traveled to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, many years in a row for the Airventure Oshkosh air show, a gathering of aviation enthusiasts and pilots held every summer. Vern’s parents were ecstatic and his friends were shocked when he married Gloria in 1987. His friends had been sure he was a bachelor for life and too set in his ways to ever commit to marriage. His parents, on the other hand, believed their son would finally settle down and stop the flying foolishness. Instead, Vern encouraged Gloria (who had always been a nervous car driver) to get her pilot’s license, after which they both received helicopter ratings and flew their helicopter throughout Michigan together. In addition to their helicopter escapades, Vern and Gloria traveled to many places throughout the world including most of Europe, Alaska, Hawaii, and the Caribbean. Their trip to Russia, which Gloria won as a prize through a credit card sweepstakes, was especially memorable. Vern also earned his contractor’s certification and was particularly proud of a patent he obtained for a bicycle gear. He shared his mechanical knowledge with his grandsons Sam and Jake throughout the years and would be pleased to see how they have used what he taught them in their daily lives. An avid hunter with both rifle and bow, Vern hunted with friends Roger and Bill and most years bagged a buck (it was against his personal rules to shoot does). Much to Gloria’s chagrin, one of the unfortunate bucks’ heads was mounted on Vern and Gloria’s family room wall for most of their marriage. Vern retired from General Motors in 2002, with most of his years there spent with Chevy Truck and Bus. Special thanks goes to the staff at Niche Aging Center in Bay City, who not only took in Vern and cared for him when he needed it most, but loved him and treated him with dignity, making his few last years comfortable. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a private family memorial service will be held on September 14 at 12:00 with visitation open to the general public from 10 to 12 at O’Guinn Funeral Home in Birch Run, MI. Masks and social distancing will be required. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Michigan Humane Society may be made.
