Hazel A. Sabin

Born: 5/31/1925
Died: 3/20/2018
Age: 92
Community: Flint, MI

On May 31st, 1925 Hazel Anna was born to John and Clara Ulman in Tawas City, Michigan. Hazel was raised on a small family farm along with her twelve siblings, seven brothers, and five sisters. Hazel attended a one-room schoolhouse earning high marks. In later years she expressed regret for not being able to finish her education past the eighth grade. What she did learn she learned well. She was an avid reader for the rest of her life and enjoyed solving crossword puzzles. Hazel’s first regular job was on a larger farm in the Tawas area. Her duties were mostly meal preparation for the family of farmers and their hired help. Later she remembered how nervous she had been, not having had a lot of experience cooking for so many. She managed to satisfy her employers and she shared her meager salary with her family. On June 24th, 1944 at the age of nineteen Hazel married Lloyd G. Sabin, a local young man from nearby Hale, Michigan. World War II brought a demand for workers in Detroit factories to help supply the nation’s needs. The young couple, along with several family members, moved to the large city. They all found jobs. Hazel became a welder helping to manufacture warplanes. Hazel loved her job and more so the paycheck. It was a big change from her monetarily poor upbringing. In later years she admitted to being upset when she learned men received a higher wage than women. City life didn’t agree with some of the family and most migrated back to the quieter “up North” at the end of the war. In October 1947, Lloyd and Hazel were blessed with their first child, a boy, Eugene. Soon after, Lloyd landed a job at Buick and the new family moved to Flint, MI, which was Hazel’s home for the rest of her life. Hazel gave up working and began her career as a mother and homemaker. She excelled at this for the remainder of her time on this Earth. 1950 brought another son, Stephen and 1954, a daughter, Darlene, who tragically died in infancy. In 1958 the family exploded in number with the arrival of twins, Barry and Denise. In 1965 Hazel bore her last child, Jeffrey. In August 1970, Lloyd lost his battle with cancer, dying two weeks before the birth of the first grandchild. Hazel was left with the three children to raise. She learned to budget her small income to accommodate the needs of her children. Hazel was a steadfast and devoted parent who led a life of service to her family. She also donated hours and hours and financial support to her church, Eastwood Methodist. Hazel was an excellent baker. Her lemon meringue pie at church dinners made good Christians covet if they weren’t lucky to get a piece. After the children had grown and had children of their own, and their children had children of their own, Hazel continued to support in any way she could; all of her six children, twelve grandchildren, countless great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. On the first day of spring, March 20th, 2018 Hazel Anna Sabin (Ulman) left this world for a much-deserved rest. She will be greatly missed. A funeral service will take place at 12 noon on Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at Brown Funeral Home, 1480 E. Hill Rd., Grand Blanc. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 from 4-8pm, and again on Wednesday, one hour prior to the service, beginning at 11am. Interment at Flint Memorial Park.
