Shirley E. Towns passed away peacefully on May 23, 2026, at McLaren Health Care, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on April 17, 1935, to her beloved parents, Vena and Frederick Kaupp, Shirley lived a full and vibrant life, proudly reaching the milestone she often spoke of—90 years old.
Born into a large and loving family, Shirley grew up alongside three sisters and two brothers. She treasured her family deeply and was preceded in death by all but one of her siblings. A proud graduate of Flint Northern High School, Class of 1953, Shirley carried the spirit of Flint with her throughout her life.
Shirley enjoyed life in her own unique way. She loved listening to rock music, spending time working in her yard during her younger years, and most of all, making memories with her family. She truly lived life to the beat of her own drum.
Anyone who knew Shirley knew she had a gift for conversation and could spend hours on the phone catching up with loved ones. She was outspoken, spirited, and never afraid to share what was on her mind. Her honesty, strength, and unmistakable personality made her unforgettable to those who loved her.
A hardworking and devoted mother, Shirley held many jobs throughout her life—including bartending and shop work—doing whatever was needed to provide for her six children: Kenny, Matt, Lynda, Loree, Jeff, and Robbie (Terri). Later, she dedicated many years caring for others through work in local AFC homes and eventually with Genesee County Mental Health, retiring in 2015 at the remarkable age of 80. Caring for others was simply who Shirley was.
Family was at the center of Shirley’s life. She played an especially meaningful role in raising her beloved "favorite"grandson, Jeffrey, beginning in the 1990s, helping shape him into the strong and devoted man he is today. For the last 11 years, she lovingly cared for her great-grandson Kaden, affectionately known as her “youngest kid.” Jeffrey and Kaden brought immeasurable joy to her life and were truly the sparkle in her eye.
Shirley shared a special bond with each of her grandchildren: Jaime (Brooke) (Bill), Kassie, Stevi, Katrisha, Kenny, Kayla, Jeffrey (Noelle), Darci (Brandon), Rachelle, and Monica (Jake). Her home was filled with laughter and treasured memories, especially during weekends and holidays spent swimming, gathering together, and enjoying special family trips.
She was also a proud and loving great-grandmother to Greyson, Carter, Danny, Kaden, Jaxon, Hudson, Lincoln, Kannon, Kaitlynn, and her cherished great-granddaughter, Hannah. Shirley loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren deeply and found great joy in watching her family grow.
Shirley is survived by her loving sister, Connie (Ron) Jacob; sister-in-law, Nancy Kaupp; lifelong friend, Gary Keen; and many nieces and nephews who will cherish her memory.
She was preceded in death by her beloved parents; siblings; son, Kenny; grandchildren, Kenny and Kayla; and son-in-law, Bob Keeler.
Though Shirley will be deeply missed, her love, strength, and unforgettable spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
A visitation will take place on Monday, June 1, 2026, from 11:00 am until 2:00 pm, at Martin Funeral, Cremation & Tribute Services, 1194 E. Mt. Morris Rd. Mt. Morris, MI 48458. Burial at Flint Memorial Park Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be shared with the family on Shirley's tribute wall at martinfuneralhome.com.
