Margaret was born on May 11, 1929, in Flint, Michigan, to the late William and Ada Burke.

She graduated from Flint Central High School in 1947. In 1952, she married Lewis Rough III.

Together they built a life of love and cherished memories, setting an example of devotion for all who knew them.

A lifelong and devoted parishioner of St. John Vianney Catholic Church, Margaret was an active member of the Altar Society and faithfully served on the church’s finance committee and as a lector. She also served the community on PTO’s and as Boy Scout and Girl Scout troop leader.

She worked for many years as a secretary for the Flint Board of Education. An entrepreneur at heart, she later opened and successfully ran Second Chance Shoppe- Diamonds in the Rough, in Flint.

Margaret loved people and truly never met a stranger. Her outgoing personality, sense of humor, and genuine interest in others attracted friends of all ages, creating lifelong friendships that spanned generations. She listened carefully, remembered stories, and made everyone laugh. She loved to travel and shared many adventures with her adult children and friends, including a particularly meaningful trip to her parents’ hometown in Newfoundland, Canada.

To say Margaret had a competitive spirit might be an understatement. She walked four miles a day, participated in the Crim Festival of Races in downtown Flint for decades, and into her 90s, enjoyed playing and watching golf, as well as games and cards.

Margaret is survived by her seven children: Deborah Rough (Gerry Pierce), Christine Rough, Lewis Rough IV, Frances Waggoner (Kevin Waggoner), William Rough (Juliana Huston_Rough), Patricia Nemeth (James Nemeth), and Marjorie Padisak (Michael Padisak).

She is also survived by her grandchildren: David Priestly; Mary Liz Priestly (Owen Adolphsen); Wesley (Holly) Pierce; Allison (Brian) West; Joseph Rough (Jennifer); Mary Margaret Quinn (Tim); Jacob Cook (Grace); Kevin Waggoner (Dr. Allison Treleaven); Ryan Waggoner; Michael Pajtas; William J. Rough and fiancé (Renee); Kristi Anderson; Arthur Nemeth (Jasmine); Sol Skvader; and Samantha, Maya, and Olivia Padisak, along with eight great-grandchildren, her sister-in-law, Carolann Rough and many nieces and nephews.

Margaret was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Lew; her grandson, William Patrick Rough; her parents; and five siblings.

Margaret “Mimi” Rough will always be remembered for her strong faith, boundless energy, adventurous spirit, fierce love for her family, and a heart that welcomed everyone.

The family is very grateful for the care of their mother provided by Tessie Wise, Mid_Michigan Home Health and Hospice and other caregivers.
