KARAFA, Mertie Lou – of Flushing, age 85, died Thursday, January 8, 2026 at Gross Assisted Living. Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 PM Thursday, January 15, 2026 at O’Guinn Family Funeral Home in Clio, Michigan. Pastor Keith Childerhose officiating. Burial in West Vienna Cemetery. The family will receive visitors on Thursday, January 15, 2026 from 11:00 AM until the time of service at the funeral home. Memorial contributions can be made to the New Covenant Church.
Mertie was born March 30,1940 in Ladysmith, Wisconsin to the late Karl and Mary (Oungst) Kemper. She grew up in Winona Lake, Indiana and graduated from Warsaw High School with the class of 1958. On June 2, 1962 she married Charles Karafa in Winona Lake, Indiana. Prior to her retirement in 2000, Mertie worked for the Michigan State Police at the Flint Post as a Secretary with 20 years of service. She attended New Covenant Church. Mertie enjoyed sewing, reading, shopping and decorating her home. She was an avid antique collector and had booths at R & J’s in Flushing, Holly’s Antiques on Main and Mike’s Antiques in Millington. Mertie loved to document family history, mementos, and pictures in scrapbooks. She liked playing board games with her family as well.
Surviving are: Husband of 63 years, Charles Karafa; Son, Jeffrey (Vicki) Karafa; Grandchildren, Bryce (Autumn) Karafa, Erin Karafa, Austin Karafa; Sister, Allegra (Thomas) Simpson, Carolyn (Paul) Northrup; Sister in law, Ruth Kemper; Cousin, Marylon Wright; several nieces and nephews; Special Friends, Mark (Cathy) Thompson and daughters, Brittany and Emma.
