HAMMONTRE, Betty – of Grand Blanc, formerly of San Diego, age 87, passed away Friday September 24, 2021 at her residence.
Per Betty’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a graveside service will be held 1pm on Thursday, October 14, 2021 at Sunset Hills Cemetery, Deacon Rod Amon from St. Mary Queen of Angels officiating.
Betty was born in Flint, Michigan on April 28, 1934, the daughter of the late Walter and Anna (Sutak) Banacki. Betty’s father was of polish descent and he was an early coal miner living in Pennsylvania and moved to Flint to work at Buick city. Her mother was of Czechoslovakian descent and she was a babysitter for a young President Ronald Reagan in Plum Hollow, Steubenville, Ohio.
As a child, Betty studied tap, ballet, toe dancing, and dance, being referred to as a polished acrobatic dancer. She participated in many dance and voice recitals, including supporting several area hospitals and Michigan organizations including the Dom Polski Polish Hall on Saginaw Street in Flint. She travelled to NY and Chicago for stage tryouts with Lena Horne, and Dorothy Lamour. She met George William Hammontre at Flint Junior College and wed on June 24, 1957 at Sacred Heart Catholic church in Flint. Betty graduated from Michigan State Normal College (Eastern Michigan University) in education. Her first teaching assignment was at Flint Emerson Junior High School, then moving to San Diego, CA. She continued her education at University of California San Diego, in computer science. Betty was a teacher in the La Jolla school system and retired from the California teachers board in 1996. After her husband’s death on July 30, 1994, she returned to Flint to be with family, traveling frequently with her brother Frank Banacki and wife Karen to local casinos and area attractions. Betty was an accomplished oil painter. Her school staff and students looked up to her as a leader. She was always kind and considerate of other people’s needs, giving aid where able. Surviving family will remember her whimsical personality, recently commenting “you are what you eat, A big fat cookie.“
She is survived by her elder brother Walter J. Banacki and Mary C Banacki, nieces and nephews Charlotte Banacki, Brenda and Frank Caruso, John Banacki, Babette Snider, Francie Nault, Amy Banacki, Jennifer Banacki, Rebecca Banacki, and Jeffrey Banacki. Her late husband’s sister Barbara Meacham and husband Larry.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her 2 brothers and their wives (Robert and Janet Banacki, Frank and Karen Banacki) and niece Alison Sagamang.
