Donna Marie Hedding

Born: 12/3/1941
Died: 11/26/2023
Age: 81
Community: Grand Blanc, MI

Our incredible and inspirational mom, Donna Hedding, passed away peacefully with her family on Sunday Nov 26. Donna was born Dec 3, 1941 in Pontiac, MI to Harold and Edna Marie (Wise) Lockhart.

Growing up in Union Lake, MI on Long Lake, Donna learned to swim, dive and ice skate at an early age and taught her kids the same. She cultivated many school friendships and until recently kept her 150-plus high school classmates updated on the lives of all.

Donna met and married Dale Paul Hedding in Ann Arbor, MI in 1961. They had three children, Deborah, Dawn, and David. Donna was a devoted, loving wife and best friend to her husband for nearly 58 years. She was a dedicated and all-in mom who was always helping the kids with homework and large special projects, driving them to clubs, track/cross country meets, and band practice, hosting their friends at the house for school projects or fun, listening, encouraging, and giving our Dad and us the best support possible. She thoroughly enjoyed her grandkids, Chris, Michael, and Grace, and loved to play board games, talk, and spend time with them throughout her entire life.

Some of Donna’s many attributes can be described as generous, giving, high energy, fun, organized, creative, and determined.

Her creativity was demonstrated in many ways, including her cake decorating, arts and crafts, and Halloween costumes for her kids that won prizes. Many kids, adults, and organizations were gifted with a personalized and beautifully decorated cake for a special event to bring them cheer.

Our mother was driven to joyfully and unselfishly help others. Her energy and passion manifested itself for 45 plus years in Grand Blanc - in the school system, the FISH organization, the elections office, the Grand Blanc United Methodist Church, and most recently the Genesee County Free Medical Clinic. She co-founded the Christmas Basket food drive for FISH to bring food and gifts to local families in need, started the FISH clothes closet, worked tirelessly in the elections office, coordinated all volunteer hours/ activities for the school district, was a part of 50/50, worked closely with the superintendent of schools and principals at GBHS and set up an informal network to donate and deliver medicines to the local Free Medical Clinic. Always unassuming and never looking for accolades, she was honored many times - one of the most unique was being the grand marshal of the GB Homecoming parade.

Donna was a dedicated and faithful church leader/member at GB United Methodist; who for 40 plus years served on the outreach/ mission committee, taught junior church school with her husband, fundraised for the CROP walk, and volunteered with MOPS. She thoroughly enjoyed this church community, its fellowship, and the many deep friends created from the time spent there.

Donna was a good friend and listener, practical and with a wry sense of humor. She enjoyed keeping people connected and staying in touch with everyone.

She loved to travel and did so extensively with her dad, husband, brother, and son - Australia, New Zealand, Stockholm, Panama, Canadian Rockies, Nova Scotia, Netherlands, Germany, many US national parks, countless visits to her daughters wherever they were living and bi-annual trips to the UP to visit family.

Donna is survived by her loving children: Deborah (Kevin) Caplan - Roach and Dawn (Jim) Hellmich; daughter in law, Kelli Hedding; grandchildren: Chris (Marissa) Hellmich, Michael Hellmich, and Grace Hedding; nieces and nephews: Robin Hanrahan, Bill Lockhart, Barb LaRocca, Edward Hedding, and Vicki Toews; many great and great - great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by both parents; son, David Hedding and brother, Ronald Lockhart.

Visitation will be Dec 2 from 1- 6 pm at Hill Funeral Home, 11723 S Saginaw St, Grand Blanc, MI (810-694-4141). Donna’s service will be on her 82nd birthday, Dec 3, at Grand Blanc United Methodist Church (515 Bush Ave) from 2 - 3pm. The service will preceded by a visitation from 1-2pm and followed with a dinner/celebration in honor of her 82nd birthday.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the non-profit organizations of FISH, P.O Box 367, Grand Blanc, MI 48439 or Grand Blanc United Methodist Church - Missions Committee, 515 Bush Avenue, Grand Blanc, MI 48439.
