Carol Lynn (Vargo) Wahl

Born: 12/27/1948
Died: 2/9/2026
Age: 77
Community: Services at Christ Lutheran Church, Reese, MI

Carol Lynn (Vargo) Wahl, 77, of Gilford, Michigan, passed away peacefully at home on February 9, 2026. She was a deeply pragmatic woman of quiet faith who loved fiercely, supporting the people she cared about with her whole heart, yet never hesitating to share insight, call out nonsense, or speak the hard truths that ultimately helped others grow.

To her niece and nephews, she was more than an aunt: she was a second mother, a guide, and a constant source of clarity. Over the years she shaped their lives with her honesty, her steadiness, and her unwavering belief in their ability to choose well. She was called simply “Aunt,” a name that carries the same weight and affection as “Mom” or "Dad" and reflected the profound role she played in their lives.

She had a gift for turning neighbors into friends and connecting those friends to one another, bringing a sense of warmth and belonging to her hometown of Gilford. She stayed connected to friends across all chapters of her life, including some she had known since grade school.

In her professional life, she was a successful beautician and later worked in the administrative side of healthcare, including for years in Medical Records at Saint Mary's Hospital and later as Office Manager for Seton Cancer Institute.

Carol is survived by her niece Tabitha “Toby” Vargo of Gilford; nephews William Vargo of Saginaw; Robert and Kim (Ellis) Vargo of Spokane, Washington; Carl Vargo of Caro; Peter and Beth (Bobbitt) Schury of Wako, Japan; Michael (Schury) and Philip Erickson of East Lansing; and numerous loving family and friends. She was preceded in death by her father William Vargo, mother Henrietta (Meinecke) Vargo, brother William Howard Vargo, sister?in?law Amy (Hoar) Vargo, sister Amelia (Vargo) Schury, brother Richard Vargo, and sister?in?law Janet (Newbold) McLain.

Carol's family will be present to receive friends at Christ Lutheran Church (1928 S. Reese Road, Reese) between 10:00 am and 11:00 am on Saturday, March 7, followed by a funeral service starting at 11:00 am with lunch in the fellowship hall following.

A private interment will be held at a later date in the Vargo family plots at Gilford Township Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, Carol's family requests memorial donations be made to the Rogel Cancer Center Sarcoma Research Fund (Fund 365512) at the Sarcoma Clinic at University of Michigan Health Rogel Cancer Center.
