MCLAVY, Phyllis Elaine - Of Mt. Morris, age 80, died Friday, May 11, 2018 at Maple Woods Manor.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at the Faith Missionary Church, 1327 North Elms Road, Flint, Pastor Brent Kriesch and Pastor Tom Knight co-officiating. Mrs. McLavy will be at church from 10 a.m. Wednesday until the time of the service.
Visitation 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint.
Burial in Flint Memorial Park.
Those desiring may make contributions to Faith Missionary Church or Brown City Missionary Camp.
Phyllis was born in Flint on February 12, 1938, the daughter of Pearl and Ruth (nee Frances) Chapman, and was a resident of the Flint area most of her life. She married Walt McLavy on October 18, 1958. She received a Bachelor’s Degree from Goshen College and a Master’s Degree from Eastern Michigan University. She had also earned 60 credit hours beyond her Masters at Oakland University. Mrs. McLavy was a longtime member of Lioness District 11D1, where she served as District President twice.
She served on the Michigan Eye Bank and Transplantation Center as Chairperson for a year and secretary for several years.
She was a longtime member of Faith Missionary Church, singing in the choir, playing piano and organ, and teaching children's Sunday School.
Mrs. McLavy taught for 30 years in the Beecher School District.
Following her retirement, she taught for five years at Bethany Christian Mission School in Bethany, Kentucky. She loved teaching and always found great peace and joy with her music.
Surviving are her husband, Walt;
2 children, Mark and wife Janet of Flint, Rebecca and husband Warren Schmidt of Thief River Falls, Minnesota;
5 granddaughters, Kirsten Dik, Kristina Dik, Grace McLavy, Olivia Schmidt and Audrey Schmidt;
many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Lawrence Chapman and
sister, Lorraine Smith.
