Barbara Joanne Weatherhead passed away peacefully on October 10, 2026, at the age of 95. She was a longtime resident of Flint, Michigan.
Visitation will be held Thursday, October 15, 2026, from 4:00 – 7:00 PM at Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint, Michigan.
The funeral will be held at Swartz Funeral Home on Friday, October 16, 2026, at 11:00 AM, with Pastor Rigel Dawson officiating. A brief visitation beginning at 10:00 AM will precede the service.
Burial will take place at Flint Memorial Park.
In memory of Barbara, memorial contributions may be made the HIS Ministry, INC., a food pantry, at Bristol Road Church of Christ A Family of Faith.
She was born in Bailey, Michigan on August 17, 1931, to Emmel and Marian Porteen. She graduated from Kent City High school in 1949. Barbara was determined to become a teacher, so she attended Western Michigan University and graduated in 1953. She moved to Flint to teach and met William Weatherhead, also a teacher. They fell in love and were married August 6, 1955. Once married they shared their love of teaching and eating out. Barbara had only one love in her life, Bill. Their marriage lasted only 36 years since he passed away unexpectedly.
She was very active in her church; teaching, working at the food pantry, and working at funeral dinners. She enjoyed Bible studies and was involved in both the ladies’ and seniors’ groups. She loved going to Bristol Road Church of Christ A Family of Faith because they were her family, too.
Barbara taught 34 years in the Flint Community Schools. She loved teaching and listening to children read. One of her greatest joys was listening to her grandchildren and great grandchildren read to her and tell her about their many adventures.
Some of her interests after retirement included the Flushing Book Club, MARSP (Michigan Association Retired School Personnel), and the NEA (National Education Association). Barb was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a teachers’ organization. She enjoyed traveling throughout Michigan, Canada, the United States, Europe, and Australia.
Barbara is survived by her two daughters; Susan (Timothy) Johnson and Anne Myers; her grandchildren; Andrew (Rachel) Johnson, Jennifer (Daniel) Eisinger, Anthony (Amanda) Fontana, Katie (Taylor) Hunt, and William Fontana; her great grandchildren; Everett and Walker Johnson, and Emma, Esther, and Ezra Eisinger; her brother; Richard (Linda) Porteen; and many nieces, and nephews. The family would like to acknowledge loving friends Mike, Kathy, John, and Shandelle.
She was preceded in death by her parents Emmel and Marian Porteen; her husband, William Weatherhead; brothers-in law and sisters-in-law; Ken Weatherhead, Don and Anita Loomis, Richard and Elaine Hendricks; and son-in law; Bob Myers.
