Passed away Tuesday, May 22, 2018, at Medilodge of Frankenmuth; age 86 years. Dean was born on January 23, 1932 in Youngwood, PA to the late Huey and Hazel Mates. He honorably served in the US Army. Dean was married to Kathleen Conroy on June 18, 1960 in Greensburg, PA, she survives him. He was employed by General Motors until his retirement of 33 years in 1987. He was a member of Blessed Trinity Catholic Church, was a sport enthusiast and loved his family, especially his grandchildren.
Surviving besides his wife Kathleen are; 3 children, Rebecca Marheine of Fredericksburg, VA, Andrew Mates of Hudson, WI, Jennifer (Ronald) Reece of Birch Run, MI; 5 grandchildren, Andrew Marheine, Madeline (Corey) Sisk, Rachel Marheine, Kyle Reece, Brian Reece; a sister, Alice Niswonger of Scottdale, PA.
Dean was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Emerson Mates and Don Mates, and a sister Ruth Null.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, May 26, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at Blessed Trinity Catholic Church, 958 E. Tuscola Rd., Frankenmuth, Michigan, Fr. Robert Byrne will officiate. Cremation has taken place. Dean’s family will receive visitors at Cederberg Funeral Home of Frankenmuth, 590 N. Franklin St. on Friday from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and at church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. There will be a Vigil Service on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
