Our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt, Helen Louise Church, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Saturday, July 25, 2026 at the McLaren – Flint Hospital. Age. 79 years. Helen was born on July 9, 1947 to the late Rona Florence Louisa Challinor and Gustaf Rudolph Heyneman. She was raised throughout her youth by her stepmother, Lillian Heyneman, and her father. Helen attended grades K-12 at St. Mary’s in Mt. Morris. On May 16, 1966 Helen married the love of her life, David Arthur Church, and he preceded her in death on April 7, 2024. Helen worked as a paralegal her whole life and enjoyed doing volunteer work with the Genessee County Bar Association. She was a Detroit Tigers and Red Wing NUTT; cheering them on or going to games whenever she could. Helen was a Catholic and happy to be re-united with her beloved husband in heaven. Helen will be missed dearly by all, and her memories will be cherished forever.
Left to cherish her memories are her son, David Anthony Church of Milford; three grandsons, David Aaron of Grand Blanc, Jake of Fenton, and Mason (Julia) Church, of Fenton; sisters-in-law, Sandra, Linda, Janet, Carol, Ellie, Lou, and Gerri; brother-in-law, Ron Baker; more nieces and nephews than can be counted; and many friends. Helen is happily reunited with her husband, David Arthur Church; parents, Rona Challinor and Gustaf (Lillian) Heyneman; two sisters, Teri (Gary) Sexton and Gayle Baker; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
A Liturgy of the Word will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 29, 2026 at the Caterer Family Funeral Home, 307 E. Main St. Flushing, MI 48433. Celebrating will be Rev. Fr. Christian Salata. Visitation will take place at the Caterer Family Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 28, 2026 from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Service. At the request of Helen and her family, cremation will take place following services. Inurnment in Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider a memorial to the “Genessee County Bar Association” https://www.gcbalaw.org/ or “Pathways to Peace Foundation” https://www.ptopf.org/.
