FARNEY, Richard J. – Of Brandon, Florida, formerly of Grand Blanc, age 89, died Friday, March 14, 2014 in Brandon, Florida.
Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 21, 2014 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint, MI, Reverend Paul Ytterock officiating.
Burial in Flint Memorial Park with a military graveside service under the auspices of the Marine Corps League Flint Detachment #155 Honor Guard.
Visitation 3-7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Wounded Warriors.
Richard was born in Detroit, Michigan on August 17, 1924, the son of the late Frank and Isabelle (Watts) Farney.
Richard attended and graduated from St. Mary High School in Mt. Morris in 1943. He later attended GM Institute.
Richard was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in the Armed Guard from 1943 to 1946. He was one of five brothers, serving in World War II.
On August 11, 1951 he married Louise Ketrow at Oak Park Methodist Church.
Richard worked at AC Spark Plug for 35 years, working in drafting and later in plant protection.
Richard returned to the Navy Reserve and retired from there as a SM 1/C after 26 years.
He was a former member of First Presbyterian Church in Flint and then joined First Presbyterian Church in Brandon, Florida.
He sang with the AC Male Chorus and also Flint First Presbyterian Church for many years.
Surviving are wife of 62 years, Louise;
sons, David and Fran Farney,
Gary and Steven;
grandsons, David Jr., Gary Jr. and Bryan;
granddaughters, Allison Cason and Kris Long;
two great-granddaughters, Olivia and Bernice;
brother, Tom and wife Ellen;
many nieces and nephews;
He was preceded in death by brothers, Dennis, twins, Patrick and William and Frances (Andy).
sisters, Anna Armstrong, Florence Muringer, Helen Niles and Isabelle Thompson.
