Born in Chicago, Illinois on August 19, 1929, and raised in Castel di Sangro, Italy, Romano returned to the United States as a young man to begin a new life. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War, an experience that reflected the duty and commitment he carried throughout his life. When he returned home, he devoted himself to family, faith, and helping others.

Before being drafted, Romano met the love of his life, Vita “Vera” Peraino, at the Order Sons of Italy in America. They married shortly after he returned from the war and raised four children together. Vita predeceased Romano on April 19, 2017.

Romano retired in 1981 from the General Motors Chevrolet Fabricating Plant, where he worked as a tinsmith. Curious and inventive, he embraced new technology and could build and repair almost anything. He also loved gardening, cooking, and baking. Family and friends especially treasured his homemade bread, Italian sausage, wine and limoncello. He even motorized his sausage-casing machine to improve the process and continued baking and sharing more than 12 loaves of bread every other week into his early 90’s.

Romano’s quick wit, warm humor, and genuine interest in people made everyone feel welcome. He never met a stranger and generously shared his time, talents, and strong work ethic with anyone who needed a hand. His Catholic faith guided how he lived and treated others.

That spirit of service was also evident in his more than 40 years of volunteer work with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. During weekly visits to the VA in Saginaw, he played cards and offered friendship, laughter, and companionship. Romano was also an active member and former Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, as well as a member and former Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He leaves behind his four children: Stephen (Cindy) D’Angelo, Tina (David) Holland, Joseph (Susan) D’Angelo, and Diane (Michael) Boling; ten grandchildren: Angela (Chad) Mott, Erich Farner, Nicole (Jason) Cummings, Tony (Katie) D’Angelo, Joseph (Meg) D’Angelo, Mark (Joe) D’Angelo, Kelly D’Angelo, Beth Holland, Danielle (Brian) Dmytrusz, and Sammie (Joe) Thornton; and seven great-grandchildren: Owen, Alexa, Sophia, Carson, Camryn, Ava, and Andrew. He was preceded in death by his parents: Romano E. and Giaconda D’Angelo: wife, Vita “Vera” D’Angelo: 2 sisters, Olga D’Angelo and Nellie D’Angelo-Mosca.

Romano will be remembered for his generous heart, remarkable talents, unwavering work ethic, and the simple but meaningful way he brought people together, usually with food. The knowledge, laughter, and kindness he shared will live on through his family and the many lives he touched. He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.
