Shirley was born in Bay City, Michigan, on November 12, 1929, the beloved daughter of the late William and Nora (Hafner) Voss. A graduate of Bendle High School, she married her high school sweetheart, Alfred James Slater, on December 10, 1949, in Flint, Michigan. Together they shared nearly 60 wonderful years of marriage until Alfred's passing on March 5, 2009. Shirley devoted her career to serving as a secretary and bookkeeper in the medical field, retiring after many years of faithful service. Retirement brought some of her greatest joys as she and Alfred spent treasured time at their cottage on Lake Huron, where they loved welcoming family and friends and creating lasting memories together. Her greatest happiness, however, came from her family. Shirley never missed an opportunity to attend the activities and milestones of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, taking immense pride in celebrating each of their accomplishments. She especially cherished hosting Christmas in her home, carefully ensuring every detail was just right so her loved ones would feel welcomed and surrounded by warmth. Shirley was a woman whose life was centered on her family, her home, and her faith. She was loving, caring, generous, gentle, and blessed with a wonderful sense of humor that brought smiles to those around her. She firmly believed in the power of prayer, often saying that prayer could move mountains, and she found comfort and inspiration by listening to religious programs each Sunday. She took great pride in creating a beautiful, welcoming home where family always knew they were loved. Her legacy of unwavering faith, kindness, hospitality, and unconditional love will remain in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.

Shirley is survived by her loving children: William A. (Diane) Slater, James R. (Susan) Slater and Beth Ann Slater; grandchildren: William (Marzena) Slater, Michelle (Jason) Sweeney, James P. (Andria) Slater, Kari (Braden) Mantei, Brandon (Amber) Slater, Joshua (Crystal) Slater, and Corey (Sujal) Patel; great grandchildren: William, Adam, Parker, Dash, Wyn, Canon, Crew, Hudson, Palmer, Adeline, Emmitt, Ian, Eloise, Jenson, Ayrton and Teddy; many other loving family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Alfred James Slater; sister, Betty Duell.
