Daniel Lewis Scrimger, age 82, lifetime Lapeer County resident, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family and a lot of love, on August 2, 2026.
Dan was born on November 2, 1943 in Pontiac, Michigan, to Lewis and Mary Kaye (Walker) Scrimger. He graduated from North Branch High School, class of 1962. Dan married the love of his life, Madelyn Lorraine Sanborn on June 26, 1965, at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church in North Branch.
Dan’s professional career in real estate began in 1969 when he earned his realtor’s license. He earned his broker’s license in 1973. Dan owned and operated Red Carpet Keim, Dan Scrimger, Inc. from 1974 until 2008. More than one of his employees said “maybe not the best job, but the best boss”. In 2008 he merged his firm with Coldwell Banker Professionals and continued to work until he was 80 years old. He helped a multitude of people buy and sell their homes over the years, and made many friends along the way.
A big part of Dan and Madelyn’s life was boating. First starting out at Barnes Lake where he pulled skiers behind his boat all day long. Together they taught many people to water ski. He loved to hear the words “hit it”. As the kids got older in age, his passion turned to bigger boats and fishing. Every boat they owned from then on out was appropriately named “Priority”. Over time the fishing boat manifested into a pleasure boat. Together they thoroughly enjoyed boating the Great Lakes. Caseville Marina and his friends there became a every weekend plan. Boating friends loved to follow Dan through the Great Lakes as he was especially gifted at navigational skills (but, if Dan said be there at 6AM- he meant it- because Dan’s boat left at 6AM, with or without you).
Dan also loved to fly. He owned multiple planes and enjoyed taking people for rides, or taking his family for trips by plane. He grew an amazing garden, continuing on with his farming roots from childhood. He hunted for deer , rabbit and pheasant. He loved to entertain and was a very good cook. His grandchildren would say his pancakes (both regular and Swedish) couldn’t be beat. One thing was certain, if Dan made a great meal, he also made a great mess in the kitchen. His other specialties were popovers, pineapple upside down cake, rhubarb pie and smoked salmon dip just to name a few.
If you knew Dan, you knew he loved to gamble and was a sharp card player. He enjoyed euchre, poker and moon weekly and sprinkled in a trip to the casino whenever he could.
Dan was a people person. He loved entertaining and making people happy. When taking a photo he was the first one to say “Say Whiskey” to get everyone to smile. Over the years as the grandchildren got older “Say Whiskey” turned to “Say Shit” which surely made everyone smile!
Dan was a lot of things, but above all he was a family man - his family truly meant the world to him and vice versa. You could count on him to always show up. Quiet at times, a man of few words perhaps, yet he made an impact everywhere he went. He was a good listener, and if he asked you what you were up to, he really wanted to know. He interacted with people in a way that made you feel heard. When you left any Dan Scrimger conversation you felt cared for. Dan told many, “I’ve had a great life” and it was true. He will be missed dearly.
Dan is survived by his daughters: Delynn (Mike) Scrimger-Knickerbocker of Lapeer and Tricia (Phil) Scrimger-Bellinger of Metamora; grandchildren: Phillip (Claire) Bellinger, Tanner (Olivia) Bellinger, Walker Scrimger, Owen (Miranda) Knickerbocker and Tessa Knickerbocker; great-grandchildren: Tanner “Buck”, Phillip, Harper and Isla; siblings: Sue Butterfield, Joe (Kay) Scrimger, and Therese (Robert) Bertee; brother & sister in-laws: M. Kathleen (Ralph) Deshetsky, Josephine (David) Costello and Jorja Scrimger; and many, many nieces and nephews. Dan is also survived by his dear friend, Sharon Clemons of Fostoria.
Dan was preceded in death by the love of his life, Madelyn Scrimger; his son: Timothy Scrimger; brother, Robert “Shade Tree” Scrimger; brother in-law, Bob Butterfield; nephews: Todd Bertee and Robert “Bobby” Scrimger as well as his aforementioned parents.
Dan’s visitation will be 4-8PM Thursday August 6, 2026, at Muir Brothers Funeral Home in Lapeer. The Rosary will be prayed at 7PM Thursday at the funeral home. Daniel’s funeral Mass will be 10:30AM Friday August 7, 2026, at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 6645 Washington St., North Branch, MI 48461. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church, from 9:30-10:30AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are encouraged to the Lapeer Eagles #2427 or for a memorial bench to be placed at the Caseville Marina (checks payable to Claire Bellinger).
