In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Holy Rosary Catholic Church and the Humane Society of Genesee County in Edward’s honor as both were dear to his heart.
Born on July 6, 1928, in Flint, Michigan, Edward was the son of Arthur and Emilie (Rouselle) Chalut. He was a graduate of St. Mary Parochial School, class of 1948. After graduating from high school, he proudly served as a Sergeant in the United States Army during the Korean War. His time in the Army instilled in him a lifelong sense of honor, resilience, and discipline—traits he would carry with him in every aspect of his life.
Edward married the love of his life, Mary Baksa, on September 11, 1954, and together they built a beautiful life grounded in faith, love, tradition, and unwavering support for one another. Their marriage of over 70 years was a testament to partnership and devotion.
Edward worked at A&P grocery store for 18 years, ultimately in the role of Assistant Manager. He then began working for General Motors (GM) at AC Spark Plug in injection molding. Edward was lovingly and playfully known as “Frenchy” within AC Spark Plug. After a 25-year career with GM, Edward retired and spent his time gardening, traveling, and spending invaluable time with his family and friends.
Edward was a man of deep Catholic faith serving as an active member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in the roles of usher, greeter, Tally Committee member, Holy Rosary Festival volunteer, and President of the 50 and Over Club.
Edward was a longtime and active member of the Knights of Columbus, Davison Council 4090, where he served as Faithful Navigator and found joy in fellowship, faith-based service, and helping others. He took pride in mentoring younger members and was known for his quiet strength, compassionate wisdom, and genuine kindness as a 3rd and 4th Degree member and Knight of the Year (2004).
Edward found peace and joy in the simple pleasures of life. He was an avid gardener who cherished time spent nurturing his fruit orchard and vegetable garden, especially when it meant sharing the experience with his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed fishing trips to Canada with close family members. Edward had a passion for growing grapes and lovingly crafted and drank homemade wine—a tradition that brought him great pride and was often shared with friends, clergymen (Father Paul), and family during special gatherings. Edward also loved his many feline and canine pets throughout his life. Most recently, two kitties, Archie and Max, brought joy and comfort to him. He loved when they slept with him. Archie became Edward’s protector and was sleeping with him when Edward left us to go to Heaven.
Above all, Edward was a family man. He was most proud of the five children he and Mary raised. His face would light up whenever he spoke of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Edward was a steady, guiding presence—always ready with a listening ear, a warm smile, joke, or a story from days past. Sunday dinners, holidays, and everyday moments spent together were among his greatest joys. His commitment to successfully raising a family was evidenced by a two-time designation as the Knights of Columbus Family of the Year.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mary; his children: Renee (Jim) Sly, daughter-in-law, Melissa Chalut, Michael (Kerry) Chalut, Suzanne (Paul) Burnash, Edward (Geanene) Chalut; and 11 grandchildren: Norm (Amanda) Baldwin, Jolann Baldwin, Jeanette (Robby) Sills, Jamie (Jared) Elliott, Jacob Chalut, Samantha (Mitch) Hicks, Ashley Chalut, Kaitlin Chalut, Devon Chalut, Cassidy Chalut, and Kyle Chalut; 10 great-grandchildren (Anna, Kyndel, Mary, James, Ava, Brielle, Sadie, Clara, Braelyn, and Austin); and many cherished nieces, nephews, a brother-in-law (Jim Arnes), and several other loving family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his infant daughter, Renee Marie; his son, Mark Chalut; his siblings Loraine (Dave) Rivette, René (Audrey “Pat”) Chalut, Constance Wilson; and many beloved sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
Edward’s legacy of faith, service, and love will live on through the countless lives he touched. His gregarious voice and laugh (which could be heard for miles around), charming personality, and quick wit made him the life of every gathering. He was a fighter who never gave up, and he always chose optimism. He will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
