SOWA, Joyce A. – age 86, of Flint, MI, passed away Sunday, October 15, 2017 at home surrounded by her family. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 AM Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, G-5199 Richfield Road, Flint, MI 48506; Rev. Fr. Roy Horning celebrant. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Grand Blanc, MI. The family will receive visitors 1-8 PM Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at Allen Funeral Home, 9136 Davison Road, Davison, MI 48423 and 10-11 AM Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. A Rosary will be prayed 6 PM Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at Allen Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Holy Rosary Catholic Church, the American Diabetes Association or the National Kidney Foundation, in Joyce’s memory.
Joyce was born in Flint, MI on February 27, 1931, daughter of the late John and Harriet (Hart) McWhirter. She was a proud graduate of Flint Technical High School. Joyce was united in marriage to Raymond Sowa on February 10, 1951. She was a member of Job’s Daughters International, a charter member of the El Star Chapter of the Eastern Star and a dancer and piper in the Canadian Legion Post #46 Bagpipe Band. Joyce was also a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church.
Joyce is survived by her husband of 66 years, Raymond; 2 sons, Raymond and John (Jackie) Sowa both of Flint; 3 daughters, Stephanie (Larry) Foust of Burton, Andrea McGlashen of Davison and Marie Sowa of Flint; daughter-in-law, Michelle Sowa of Flint; son-in-law, Mark McGlashen of Davison; brother, Ralph (Judy) McWhirter of Pigeon and sister, Jean (James) Kent of Davison. Joyce will be greatly missed by 12 grandchildren; 15½ great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; many other loving family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her daughter, Karen Davis.
