He resided in Clio all his life and grew up following the Great Depression without much money. He did odd jobs at businesses to help his family starting at age nine. He graduated from Clio High School with the class of 1947. Bob dated Donna Jeanne Scott, his high school sweetheart, and they were married on April 2, 1950. His goal early in life was to be self- employed. At the age of nineteen he started a retail gas station on the corner of Clio and Tuscola Road. Bob eventually moved to the wholesale gasoline/oil business and started Sanborn Oil Company, which he owned for over 40 years. He also built and owned Sanborn Mini-Storage from 1985 to 1998. Bob was a Mason for 68 years and served as Worshipful Master of Vienna Lodge #205 in 1958, Most Worshipful Grand Master of Michigan Masons in 1982, the highest honor in Masonry. He was active in the Scottish Rite where he received his 33rd degree, was Past Patron of the Order of Eastern Stars #283. Bob was a member of the Shriners and Sovereign of Red Cross of Constantine in 2013. He served on the Clio Fire Department for 25 years, retiring as Chief in 1980. Bob also was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church, Clio Historical Society, and served on the Vienna Township Board.
