EUGENE “GENE” BERNARD BIRCHMEIER of New Lothrop, 89 passed away on May 18, 2018 at Memorial Healthcare of Owosso.
Eugene was born on July 5, 1928 to Bernard and Lucille (Streng) Birchmeier in New Lothrop, MI which would be home for the duration of his life. He married “the most wonderful woman in the world” Frances Patoprsty on October 20, 1951 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Owosso. Eugene was a loving husband, devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend. He was an excellent provider and a very hard worker, a man of ethics and strong principle. Eugene served his country in the U.S. Army in Fort Bragg, NC. His profession was Productive Assistant Superintendent at Buick Factory 36 at which he worked for 39 years. Gene was an avid gardener and maintained a beautiful yard.
He and Fran enjoyed square and round dancing, their seniors’ supper club and traveling both state-side and abroad. Eugene also served his local community in various capacities. St. Michael’s Catholic Church was very important to Gene for faith community of which he was a member all of his life.
Family was important to Eugene. He is survived by his wife of over 66 years, Frances; daughter-in-law Angie Birchmeier; sons John (Linda) Birchmeier, Jeffrey (Beverly) Birchmeier, Joseph (Georgetta) Birchmeier, and Jay (April) Birchmeier; daughters Jacqueline (Michael) Lenhard, Judith (Donald) Evans, and June (Jim) Dwyer; grandchildren Anita (Todd) Maguet, Rachel (Abel) Mendez, April and Brian Lenhard, Mary (Jason) Moore, Matthew (Kylie) Brown,
Michelle (Michael) Oginsky, Melissa (Bradley) Reddinger, Michael (Linnea) Birchmeier, Ashley (Mark) Bauer, Jeremy (Heather) Bedtelyon, Kyle (Jessica) Bedtelyon, Michael (Andrea) Schomber, Angela Johnson, Justen (Andrea) Johnson, Casey and Logan Birchmeier, Kegan (fiancé Alyssa) Birchmeier, Andrew and Melanie Birchmeier, Violet, Emma, and Lily Callis; great-grandchildren TJ, Savannah, Cameron, Makena, Gabrielle, Hannah, Zoe, Alaina, Lucas, Robert, Allen, Katelyn, Brendan, Marcus, Aaron, Eleanor, Isabella, Madelyn, Dylan, Ryan and Skylar; brother Allan (Roberta) Birchmeier; sister-in-law Mary Birchmeier; sister Grace Emmendorfer; brother Frank (Vivian) Birchmeier; sister Carolyn (Richard) Fox and sister Elaine Birchmeier; brother-in-law Stephen (Veronica) Patoprsty; and many nieces and nephews and other loving family and friends.
Eugene was preceded in death by his parents; son James Birchmeier; sons-in-law Donald Brown and Rodney Bedtelyon; grandson Joshua Bedtelyon; siblings Rosalene (Robert) Krupp, Ronald and Leo Birchmeier; brother-in-law Harold Emmendorfer; and sister-in-law Dolores Birchmeier.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at St. Michael Catholic Church of Maple Grove with Fr. John Cotter officiating. Burial will follow at St. Michael’s Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Nelson-House Funeral Homes New Lothrop Chapel on Monday, May 21 from 2:00 to 8:00pm with a Scripture service at 7:00pm, and also at the church on Tuesday from 10:00am until the service.
