COPPO, Leona G. - Of Flint Township, age 103, died Monday, December 25, 2023 at Regency of Grand Blanc.
A memorial service will be held Monday, January 29, 2024 at 3:00pm at Central Church of the Nazarene, 1261 Bristol Rd, Flint, with Pastor Maurice Horne officiating.
Visitation from 2:00pm on Monday until the time of service.
Cremation has taken place; interment will be at the West Branch Cemetery, Skandia, Michigan, at a later date.
Memorial gifts may be made to the Central Church of the Nazarene "Imagine" initiative.
Leona was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and grew up in Skandia, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
On December 17, 1943 she married Martin A. Coppo in Ypsilanti, Michigan, and he preceded her in death on November 29, 1991.
Leona lived in many places including Ypsilanti, Boston, Cleveland and Cambridge Ohio, and then Flint. While in Ypsilanti, she worked handling coded teletype communications at the B-24 bomber plant.
The greatest joys in life were her grandchildren, and her great-grandson.
Leona was a long time member of Lincoln Park United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school, was very active in the Women's Society, and helped with pastie sales.
She was an avid collector of Cambridge glass, and was a member of a local club for many years. She also enjoyed sewing and playing piano. She kept in touch with many current and previous friends through cards and other correspondence. Leona had an amazing memory; she could recall exact dates and events many decades in the past. Her sweet disposition and sharp mind were with her until the end.
Leona is survived by daughter Carol Christensen and favorite son-in-law Jack Christensen of Grand Blanc; grandchildren Erica (Tyler) Mann, Aaron Christensen, and great-grandson Henry Martin Mann, all of Austin, Texas, and special friend Betty Grossklaus, who always called her, "Ma #2."
