CANANDA, Donald Richard, MD - Age 81, of Flint, passed away at his residence on Sunday, January 24, 2016 after a four year battle with lung disease. Born February 22, 1934 in Flint to Bluie and Hattie (Priest) Canada, Donald will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 33 years, Carol “Til” Bowerman and his children Kimberly (Alan) Rossi of East Grand Rapids, Kyle (Penny) Canada of Clarkston, Kreston (Pam) Canada of Fenton; step-children Laurie Pandzik of Ft Lauderdale, Linda (Bruce) Seeley of Flint and Sally (Ken) Litteral of Florence, SC; grandchildren Ryan, Alec and Kenton Rossi, Chris, Drew and Merrick Canada, Logan, Madison, Landis, Reese and Brinley Canada; step grandchildren Victor, Alex, Lauren and Patrick Pandzik, Kayla Seeley, Kristen and Jamie Litteral; and those who have known him the longest, his brothers, Harold “Sike” (Shirley) Canada and Ken Canada, both of Burton.
Donald graduated from Flint Central High School in 1952 and began studies at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1959. After a one year internship at McLaren Hospital in Flint, he completed a three year Dermatology residency at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He explored clinical practice at the Christie Clinic in Champaign, IL before beginning his own private practice in Flint. For nearly 30 years, he tended to the dermatological needs of the community and retired in 1993. Ever the academic, Don never stopped pursing knowledge and went on to earn his undergraduate degree (a BA in History) from UM-Flint.
Donald was an avid athlete, playing inning after inning of baseball in his youth and set after set of tennis in his adult life. He was a sports enthusiast who took in every moment of the Detroit professional teams (especially the Tigers) along with every moment of his beloved University of Michigan sports teams. Equally dear to him were his grandchildren’s sporting events where he was their jubilant supporter. He spent multiple years with the Lions Club and found his calling with the Retired Men’s Fellowship of Greater Flint where he served as President. Don will best be remembered for his sense of humor, his endearing bedside manner, his life-long yearning for knowledge, his love of academia, his raw intelligence, his unwavering patriotism, his humble demeanor, his appreciation for art and music and nature, his devotion to his pets, and his simplicity.
