William L. Cunningham “Tom” - of Clio, MI, went to be with the Lord on July 8th. Surrounded by his family, he met the Lord the way he lived his life: with humility and dignity. Visitation will be at the New Covenant Free Methodist Church on July 12, 2021, from 11:00 AM until 8:00 PM and on July 13,2021, from 9:00 AM until the time of service at 11:00 AM. Tom will be laid to rest with full military honors at the Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly, MI. Memorial contributions can be made to New Covenant Debt Retirement.

Tom was born in Dubuque, Iowa, on November 28, 1929, to Agnes Cunningham and was raised by Roy & Flossie Fear of Farley, Iowa. In December of 1946 Tom enlisted in the US Army. He served in the infantry in the Korean war where he was awarded the Bronze Star with Valor and later received the purple heart for being wounded in action. When Tom returned home, he became a recruiting officer in the small town of Kennett, Missouri. There he met the love of his life, Ada Sue Ross, who he married on May 4, 1952. They were happily married for 69 years. During this time, he earned his wings, becoming a helicopter pilot.

After 20 years of service, including being stationed in Germany and a tour in Vietnam, Tom retired in 1966 attaining the rank of Chief Warrant Officer W-4. Tom and Sue had three children, Dan, Dave and Sarah, while serving our country and traveling the world. They settled in Clio, Michigan. Tom briefly worked for the US Post Office before beginning a twenty-year career with General Motors. He was a longtime member of New Covenant Free Methodist Church. He was a faithful, Godly man who was involved and dedicated to serving the Lord. Distributing food baskets, organizing volunteers for the Adopt a Highway Project, and building various construction projects at the church were a few of the ministries he was involved in. His many hobbies and interests included bowling, golfing, Ohio State Buckeye Football, mowing the lawn and traveling.

He and Sue loved attending all the activities of their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. After retirement, they had fun exploring the US in their RV. Their favorite destination was South Texas where for over 25 years they enjoyed being Winter Texans. But most of all he treasured spending time with his family. Tom's definition of family extended far beyond his immediate family to others around him. His inclusive presence made people feel loved and accepted. He has impacted countless lives over his 91 years. He gave us all a great example of patriotism, honesty, integrity, and humility. He will be greatly missed!
