CAREY, Susan Kathleen - Of Owosso, age 92, died Sunday, April 12, 2015 at her residence.
Funeral service will be held 11am Friday, April 17, 2015 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint,
Dr. John L. Musgrave officiating.
Burial in Assyrian Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Assyrian Cemetery.
Visitation 6-8pm Thursday and 10am Friday until the time of the service at the funeral home.
Susan Kathleen Carey was born in North Battleford, Saskatchewan, Canada on January 19, 1923 to Nick & Lydia Jacobs. She moved to the United States in 1927 and became an American citizen at the age of 21. She married Frank Carey in 1952 and had two daughters, Diane and Suzanne. Susan worked at Buick Local 599 for over forty years and was the secretary to a succession of UAW Presidents. After retiring from the UAW, she was appointed by Governor John M. Engler to Michigan Employee Security Agency, as Commissioner, a position previously never held by a woman in Michigan. Susan was the President of the Office and Professional International Union Local 393 and a member of Mott College Multicultural Minority Council. She was recognized by the UAW Black Caucus and given the Unity for Justice Award. Susan also received the Woman of the Year Award from the Michigan Business and Professional Women's organization, The Assyrian Achievement Award, the International Institute Golden Door Award, and was the recipient of the 2005 Athena Award. She served as a trustee on the Crim Board and United Way and was a proud Assyrian-American and a contributing member in the Flint Area Assyrian community. Susan was an Elder at Community Presbyterian Church and sang in the choir for many years, prior to joining First Presbyterian Church of Flint.
Susan dearly loved and was proud of her children and grandchildren. Her final wish was "May God bless you and keep you, smile upon you, and give you joy and peace".
She was preceded in death by husband, Frank Carey, her sisters Helen Boyd and Mary Jacobs. She is survived by daughters Diane (Gregory Brodeur) Carey and Suzanne (Paul) Jarboe, sister Dorothy Donnelly, grandchildren Lydia (Ben), Gordon, Benjamin, Melissa, Amanda (Christopher), Daniel, great-grandchildren Devlin, Katie and Serenity, niece Kathy (Vito) Zito, nephew Stephan (Teresa), cousins Shirley Israel, Paula (Matt) Antoniou, Karla (Daniel) Epstein, and many beloved great nieces and nephews.
