Gerard, Sophie Louise of Flushing, age 96, died Thursday, May 14, 2026, at her home. Funeral Mass will be Tuesday, May 18, 2026, at St. Robert Catholic Church. Fr. Brian Lenz will officiate. Burial will follow at New Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be 3-8 p.m. Monday, May 18, 2026, at Rossell Funeral Home and 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church until the time of the Mass at 11 a.m. A Rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Knights of Columbus Flushing Council #8489.
Sophie was born in Thetford Township, Michigan on June 2, 1929, the daughter of Anthony and Victoria (Kmiec) Caban. She married Eugene Gerard on October 3, 1964, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mt. Morris. Sophie graduated from All Saints High School, Class of 1948. She worked for AC Spark Plug, retiring after 30 years of service. Sophie was a member of the PLAV Auxiliary and IOF.
Sophie was highly skilled in the art of crocheting and won many exhibit awards ranging from “Best of Show”, and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishes. She loved decorating for the holidays, especially at Christmas. Beginning the first of November, the tree was set up and decorated, along with garland and other decorations displayed throughout their home, all remaining until the end of January. This was a very special time for Sophie. She also enjoyed bowling, golf, gardening, polka dancing, and life in general.
Sophie is survived by her husband of 62 years, Eugene; sister, Genevieve Wing; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, John (Lottie) Caban, Victoria (Andrew) Masty, Alex (Mary) Caban, Annie (Fred) Kurtz.
