GILBERT, Tony J. - of Mt. Morris, age 89, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, May 1, 2020. A private Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 6, 2020, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 11110 Saginaw St. Mt. Morris, MI 48458. Rev. Fr. Roy Horning officiating. Internment immediately following the Mass at Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the Emmanuel Prayer Group at St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Tony was born on April 8, 1931, son of the late Frank and Mary (Puiia) Gilbert (Ciliberti). He grew up in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Tony attended St. Mary’s Catholic School. He enlisted and served in the U.S. Army for three years during the Korean War. Tony married Donna Killips on October 14, 1953. He retired from General Motors in 1987 as a repairmen after 34 years. Tony was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mt. Morris. His Catholic faith and his devotion to serving the Lord were his greatest legacy, along with a deep love for his family. He was an active and founding member of the Emmanuel Prayer Group for over 46 years. He served as a Eucharistic Minister for over 40 years for the home bound. Tony was a lifelong fisherman where he enjoyed spending many summers at his cabin on Sugar Island. He and his sons provided the prayer group with over 40 years of fish fry’s from their bounty. Tony was a lifelong fan of all Michigan professional sports. He also enjoyed many years coaching youth baseball.
He is survived by: Wife of 67 years, Donna (Killips); Brother, William; Sister, Mary; 5 children: Fred (Rose), Dianna, Frank (Teresa), Tony (Barb), and Al; 7 Grandchildren: Tony (Marika), Keith, Derek (Melissa), Jenny, Terry (Marianne), Kristina (Joe), Elizabeth; 15 great-grandchildren; Many loving friends and family. Tony was preceded in death by: Parents, Frank and Mary (Puiia) Gilbert (Ciliberti); Brothers: Frank, Fred, Louie, Joe, John, Dominic, Robert; Sister, Sara; Grandson, Jeff.The family extends a special thank you to Julie (Home Health Nurse) and Caregiver, Jenny Gilbert.
