At the time of his death at age 84, David was the oldest continuous resident of Otisville, having lived in the same house his entire life. David was born December 29, 1940, to the late Paul and Elizabeth (Wade) Lewis. He graduated from Otisville-LakeVille High School in 1959. He attended Flint Junior College and transferred to the University of Michigan Flint campus, graduating in June of 1963 with a degree in Elementary Education.
David started his career teaching at Kearsley schools for two years, followed by twenty-eight years at LakeVille Community Schools elementary grades, teaching hundreds of students over the years. His students may remember many of the special ways David added to his teaching, such as music, songs, playing guitar, games, dressing in costumes for Halloween, playing kickball, or learning how to climb the rope in the gym. David made it to the top first many times. He also had “learning stations” in the classroom and supplied many extra items the children could use. His love for teaching and his students was evident, and many kept in contact with him. David would say, “The students taught me as well as I taught them.” He was the LakeVille Teachers Union president and served on the LakeVille Board of Education.
In the early years, David played cornet in the Otisville Band, followed by a great love for music, playing the piano and organ. He was a collector of books of all kinds—too numerous to count. He often went fishing with his brother Charles and his wife, Betty. On one trip during a cast, David managed to hook and pull the top knot of Betty’s hair off. In all the commotion and laughter, Charles ended up in the lake.
David enjoyed his flower and vegetable gardens, yard work, cooking, quilting, painting, and craft projects, and he was a fan of U of M football and Detroit Red Wings hockey. He also enjoyed attending ball games and taking pictures of his nieces and nephews at their respective schools. When they were younger, he dressed up as Santa Claus to surprise them with gifts on Christmas Eve.
David is survived by sister, Nora Ann Bieszak; brother, Bill (Linda) Lewis; sisters-in-law, Ruth Lewis and Judi Lewis; nieces and nephews; Randy (Denise) Lewis, Betsy (Todd) Craig, Sharron (Ron) Swantek, Debbie (Scott) Dungee, Paul (Kim) Taylor, Kim Schmidt, Rebecca (Christian) Hart, Katie (Bryan) Heid, and Adam Lewis. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Elizabeth Lewis; brothers, Robert Lewis, Wade Lewis, and Charles Lewis; brother-in-law, David Bieszak; nephews, Todd and Tim Lewis.
Thanks to McLaren Hospice and nurses Sara, Tonya, and Maureen for their outstanding love and support for David and his family. A special thanks to David’s sister, Nora, for her love and devoted care, especially during his illness and hospice care in her home. Also, thanks to family and friends: Otisville Village friends, Emmanuel Baptist Church, and Dr. Edwin DeLange,
David left his wishes to be passed along: “Family and friends may celebrate his remembrance with the love he gave by sharing in a special way an act of kindness with another. David thanks you for being part of his life and wishes you a caring and happy life with the joy of Jesus in your heart. He leaves behind family members including many nieces and nephews that are cherished beyond words for all the good times we had together.”
