Douglas F. Thompson age 77 of Vernon, passed peacefully away Tuesday, June 24, 2025 at Memorial Healthcare Center. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM on Monday, June 30, 2025 at St. Mary's Catholic Church of Durand. Family will receive friends on Sunday, from 2-4 and 6-8 PM with a Rosary prayed at 7:00 PM. Visitation will also be one hour prior to Mass at the church.
Douglas Frank Thompson was born May 8, 1948 in Bay City, MI son of Roy and Erna Virginia (Jones) Thompson. On August 30, 1969, he married Bonnie LaTarte. Doug and Bonnie met when they were twelve years old when Bonnie's parents bought a cottage in Skidway Lake, MI where Doug's family lived next door and ran the Melody Inn Bar. After getting married, Doug and Bonnie moved back to Kalamazoo, Michigan where he earned his teaching degree at Western Michigan University and played football for the Broncos for two years. Douglas was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Durand and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed golfing, University of Michigan sports (Go Blue!), camping, traveling, going on cruises and most importantly spending time with his family. Prior to his retirement, he was a teacher for Swartz Creek Community Schools for 38 years where he coached football, wrestling and track. Douglas also was a driver's training instructor for over 30 years.
Douglas is survived by his wife of 55 years, Bonnie; children, Michele Thompson (Niles) and Scott (Cari) Thompson (Livonia); grandchildren, Eilee, Tatum, Avery and Graham; sister, Ruth (Ron) Briggs; brothers, Ernest (Kathleen) Thompson, William Thompson and Ralph (Audrey) Thompson; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Virginia Thompson; siblings, Blodwen VanHove, Joyce Hudson, Patricia McDonald and Jacklyn Felske; sister in law, Jeanne Thompson.
