HOLMES, Douglas John - Of Grand Blanc, age 84, died Friday, February 23, 2018 at his residence.
Funeral service will be held 2:30pm Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at Faith Lutheran Church, 12534 S. Holly Road, Grand Blanc,
Pastor Joe Cottam officiating.
Burial in Great Lakes National Cemetery.
Visitation 2-8pm Tuesday at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint. Visitation 1:30pm Wednesday at church until the time of the service.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Faith Lutheran Church.
Doug was born in Munger, Michigan on June 14, 1933, the son of Reginald and Clara (Mielens) Holmes. Doug grew up in Flint, Michigan and graduated from Central High School, Class of 1951. He married the love of his life, Marilyn Ross of Goodrich, Michigan on May 16, 1953. They shared 64 years together. He then served in the United States Army from 1953-1955. Doug entered into an apprenticeship in tool and die in 1951 at Chevrolet. He retired in 1986 where he worked for 36 years. Doug was Superintendent in the die room. Doug was a talented artist of stained glass and woodworking. Family members and friends have some of his wood pieces. He also loved gardening, vegetables and flowers. Doug also liked canning, cooking and baking. He was a life-long Lutheran and a member of Faith Lutheran Church-Grand Blanc, where he was a trustee for many years and a member of the Men’s Club. Doug helped Marilyn as she served in the Board of Social Ministry and they both decorated the church for Christmas for many years.
Surviving are wife, Marilyn;
3 children, Gregory, Gary, Scott and wife Becky;
grandson, Garrett and friend Lauren Johnson;
special friends, Tammy Lampinen, Lynette, Bethany and David Branch.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Shirley.
