POPILEK, Dan J. – of Flint, age 97, passed away February 28, 2016 at McLaren – Flint after a brief illness. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 AM Wednesday, March 2, 2016 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 404 N. Dayton St., Davison; Father Robert Bacik celebrant. Burial with Military Honors will be in New Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7 PM Tuesday with a Rosary following at Allen Funeral Home, 9136 Davison Rd., Davison. There will also be one hour of visitation prior to the Mass at the church Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.
Dan was born in Pulaski, MN on October 20, 1918, son of the late Joseph and Annie (Dizurek) Popilek. He married Margaret Soloman in 1949 and she preceded him in death in 1987. Dan was an avid golfer until he was 94 and was proud of his hole-in-one! He loved to dance, which is how he met his beloved wife of 38 years. Dan proudly served his country in the United States Army during WW2 where he was in charge of the nurses in the Medical Corp. He received many medals for his services from Germany, France, Africa and the Philippines. Dan owned the Sea Breeze Motel in Houghton Lake. He loved his family and his extended family very much. Dan retired from GM as Plant Protection.
Dan is survived by his brother, Leon Popilek; many nieces, nephews, extended family, great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Frances, Grace, Eva, Annette; brothers Art, Ed, Jerome, Ray.
